the fellow we bought our land from has drowned.

last night at about 7:30 (it's dark long before that), he and his girlfriend were out riding their horses.

somehow, kitty's horse and kitty slipped off the trail and crashed thru the ice into the lake. the water this time of year is just above freezing.

clyde dove off his horse and into the lake to try and save her. he went under under and was never seen again.

somehow, kitty and her horse both managed to get to shore and scramble up the bank.

clyde's horse returned to camp by himself.

the search for clyde's body was called off last night because the divers were having difficulty breaking thru the ice when they resurfaced.

today, they still have not recovered his body.

clyde was 69 years old and a good man. i can see the lights on at clyde's farm about a mile away over on the next hilltop. clyde farmed his entire life and loved horses about as much he loved people.

i'll miss clyde. i'll miss him stopping his tractor in the middle of the road to stop and shoot the breeze. i'll miss him leading all the local horse road rides and trail rides. i'll miss all his advice about country living.

most of all, i'll miss his laugh.

thank you, guys. i'm ok. i just thought that clyde deserved his passing from this word being noted.

he cheated death many times before. he had cancer, twice...he flipped tractors, twice...his barn burned to the ground while he ran in and out saving livestock...was in a bad horse crash at least once a year for the past three years (broke his pelvis in the last one.).

clyde was one tough cookie! last summer, i swear, that man worked thousands of acres of dirt down for another corporate farmer that owns farm land out the ying yang in four counties.

for a 69 year young man, he was very active. he just about finished remodelling his original farmhouse (he had built two houses before he bought his old farm back), lead all the local horse rides, farmed darn near full time, fixed all his own equipment, mended fences, owned and cared for over 60 horses and was well known in this area for putting on some of the best country dinner parties in this part of the state. that man could cook!

clyde didn't shoot and wasn't much into guns. still, i think most of you would have liked clyde. he was at bulletfest this past summer and was amazed by all the machineguns and noise. he was in the army, but said he never saw or heard anything like that before.

That just plain ole sucks :(

Sounds like he lived a hero's life (what I consider to be a person one can admire), and died a hero. While it's sad that this happened to him, his method of passing sure seems to befit the man he was.

May god have a place for him in heaven.

Sorry for your loss Campy.

I understand how you must feel. I'm a 'country boy' too, and some of my 'neighbors' are more like family to me. One of the neighbors lost his barn to a fire on Christmas day. Fortunatly he was able to get his horses out, but the structure and contents were totally destroyed. It seems that there has been a run of bad luck for many folks lately.

yes, slash. you understand.

in the country your neighbors are your lifeline sometimes...and friendships are forged tighter than in the city.

clyde lost a barn to fire about 20 years ago. as is customary in these parts, the neighbors got together and built him a new barn in three days.

last night my wife, a neighbor lady and myself drove around the township taking up a collection for clyde's family (excess proceeds will go to the fire/rescue squad that tried to save clyde and then retrieved his body) and had everyone sign a 'neighborhood' sympathy card.

calling hours are tonight. i'm not looking forward to this one.

clyde was buried today. he was dressed in a blue sweatshirt.

silkscreened onto the sweatshirt was a picture of clyde sitting on his favorite horse, 'sox'.

What a tragedy, too bad that such a good person was lost. Like everyone said, he gave his life to save another and that is what I consider to be courage, and being selfless. What a good person.
