Good Morning!

I'm shopping for a used Kobra.  What is the best way for me to identify which model it is?  Some guy tried yesterday to sell me one without the bracket that attaches to the scope rail on the ak!  He said I didn't need it..He must of thought I was born yesterday.

Anyway,  quick identifiers would be cool.  Also, If you want to get rid of one let me know..Paying 'Good' cash or magazines. *or will trade that Chinese 75 rnd drum*

the 02 model is the newest generation, controls located on the right side, used a coin type battery.
the 03m model is an upgraded 1 st gen model, the controls are on the left side, and it uses AA batteries

i prefer the 03M .

The coin model has a VERY sturdy bracket. The AA model shown has flip covers over the adj knobs and  sunshade that matters outside of Ohio. The weaver mount version of the coin battery model is fine on other guns, but needs another $40 adaptor bracket for a side rail AK mount.

According to Tantal's website, the 03 is the latest model....

The latest version, EKP-1S-03, runs on two standard AA batteries. Two fresh batteries are provided with each sight.

I had the 02 about 2 years ago and didn't like it because it didn't have the sunshade and the batteries aren't as common as AA's. I just bought the 03 and think it's a big improvement.

Redbone,
this quote is also from tantals site

EKP-1S-03M is an upgrade of the original first generation Kobra sight which made the Kobra sight so popular. Versions of this sight have been used for years by special forces operating in Chechnya, attached to the mounts of Russian AK-74M rifles. Using standard AA batteries, the -03M is an active electronic device designed for fast acquisition of both static and moving targets. Sight offers weatherized controls providing 4 improved, crisp reticle patterns (changed at the push of a button), and 16 brightness variations via a rocker arm switch. EKP-1S-03M is lightweight, low profile, and provides the most rock solid mounting platform of all versions of AK Kobra sights. We feel it is the best value for the money.

i was always confused which one was older, i guess the 03 is a first gen kobra with upgrades, and the 02 is the 2nd gen kobra.
I like the 03, and think it is an improvement on the 02, like the covers over the adjustment rings, and the placement of the controls, and the sunshade.

i have both, and my 02 doesnt have the screws for a sunshade, i wish mine did.
I like the 03 because of the sunshade, AA batts, and left mounting of the controls.
I wish they would come back on the market, id love to figure out how to mate a weaver  mount type to my moss 500a.

My 02 didn't have the screws for the sunshade either. I got mine directly from Tantal.

Well, I think I got it now!  Now I just need someone to sell me one or jump start these imports.

EX11B:
There are "side saddle" style weaver mounts for the 500/590.  CDNN and Brownell's carry them off the top of my head.

One of these would allow you to use the Weaver style Kobra.

Mine just locks in with a twist, no screws, three point contact.

I think the 02's without the shade have a placeholder ring.  You may be able to get Tantal to sell you an 02 shade and retrofit it.

Score!  I just purchased an 02 model from a guy on the site you all hate.  I paid $145 for it.
hey, maybe I paid too much, but when you can't find them this is what you gotta do.  P.S. what do they sell for new?

FWIW, mine from 1999 is a model EKP-1S which was intended to use a, hard to get, 3v lithium battery the same size as a AA (which will work but is dimmer.) I have no idea what the battery life is but it's outstanding since I'm still on the original Russian one that came with it and it's been left on for weeks at a time.
What's really odd is the 5"x5" lens cleaning cloth appears to be cut from a baby blanket. Soft, thin white cloth with multicolored teddy bears and blue flowers on it!
Kalashnikov USA was selling them out of Shotgun News at $159 when I got it. First one's I saw there were around $190.
