these are the famous "tijuana typwriters".
these are cranked out by juarez and tijuana custom shops...between tuck & roll jobs on '63 impalas. seiously...i have no clue which variant you are referring to. perhaps some kind of customized akm/ak-103? |

When we used to vacation in Puerto Vallarta there was a Mexican naval installation of some sort in downtown. The grunts (marines?) were carrying HK-91's. I'll bet it kicked those little fuckers around!!!

Hmm...everytime I've been in Mexico it seemed that the locals all had FALs of various sorts, M-16 A1s and A2s and HK 91s. Come to think of it I've never seen any AK's other than my buddie's and on TV!

Ive seen G3, FALs, M16A1s, M16A2s, M4s, Colt 9mm SMGs...Mexico has purchased a couple of everything.
But I never recall seeing any AK variant that looks like what you've described. I get reminded everytime why they are trying to get across to my side every time I go down there. What a shit hole. |

Galils are Isreali AKs based originally on the Finnish Valmet.
I wouldn't be suprised to see them in Mexico, considering how popular they are in South America. |

The Galil is an Israeli AK variant with many improvements adopted in 1974, but has since been replaced for the most part with M16 variants. Its available in 5.56mm and 7.62 NATO. It has a milled reciever, improved sights, the standard reciever safety, as well as a thumb safety on the left side of the grip and numerous other improvements.
Here's my Model 386 pre-ban:     I havent seen a Galil in Mexican use, but it wouldnt suprise me. Dont know if is the weapon you are talking about as it doesnt have a triangular M16 style front sight. |

Is that a real supressor on that Krink? It looks way too short to be real, however the overall barrel length (including whatever that is on the end) still appears to be less than 16" I guess my question is, why would you extend the barrel of a short barrel rifle but not so far as to make it a Non-Registered short barrel unless it's a real suppressor? |

jeff_d, that is a 7.62x39mm Krink on the flag that has the flash suppressor. The Russians and Bulgarians use a flash suppressor like that on the 7.62x39mm and the 5.56mm Krinks. The AKSU-74 "Krink" in 5.45mm has the standard Krink muzzle brake.
More than likely it is a Galil that you're seeing. They are issue for Guatemala, Columbia, Bolivia, and probably available all over Central and South America. |

With how Mexico is, I wouldnt be surprised someone got a few crates of Colombian Galils as a kickback of some sort. You'd be absolutly amazed what turns up south of the border. I spent a good piece down there with a pretty well to do family in the Mexican Army and got to shoot a lot with a varity of arms not avalible to the average Mexican, although I didnt shoot it, there were a number of various AKs in the armory I was in and out of, captured from various criminals/rebels and kept on for firearms familiarization. They also had a nice bit of antiques including Mexican Arisakas in 7mm :) |

Few years ago SOF had a article on the Mexican Army and its weapons. According to the article, Mexico makes its own copy of the G3 ( HK91 ).
In the pictures all the soldiers in the unit photographed had G3's, although they must not be well made as you could clearly see the paint / finish peeling off revealing bare metal underneath. The officers pictured had MP5's. Another article I remember reading showed a picture of a "Mexican Machinegun Unit" They all had Browning M1919's on tripods. There is probably not much standardization and all kinds of small arms are used as the other posts state. I'll go thru my "library" to see if I can dig up the pics. |
