Local gun store has both of them.  Can't decide which one to get.  Any suggestions?  I already have an SKS in 7.62, maybe time for a different caliber?  Should I avoid one or the other for any reason?

No reason to avoid either one.

The 47 series has / is serving all over the world and is a fine weapon.  It's round however is based on 1944 technowlogy. It still does what it was made to do in one of the most reliable platforms ever made.

The 74 is the same rifle in a different caliber.  The 5.45 round is a a much more modern design then the 7.62.  It offers much better control in rapid fire, quicker follow up shots (less recoil), better accuracy and more range. All of this in the same reliable package as the 47. penetration against hard targets does lack with this round though.

Ammo cost is roughly equal.  Most of us here have both calibers and enjoy them, but the 5.45 bug is really catching on.

47 or 74 made by whom?

47 has more smash stuff up factor
74 has better accuracy, especially flatter shooting over 100yds

I think both of the ones I was looking at were Bulgarian.  The 47 for sure was.

I stopped by again today to look at the AK-74.  It is Romanian.  Includes a 10 round and a 30 round mag, sling and cleaning kit for $350.00.  I did some shopping around on the internet and found them cheaper.  But add in a transfer fee and shipping and it's close enough that I'd rather support my local gun shop.  Any specific issues with the Romanian 74's I need to watch out for?

They arrive at the distributor with 40 round mags.  The distributor may have removed it and sent along a 30 rounder, but if the shop has a 40 rounder in stock, I would demand it in place of the 30 rounder for that price. he is switching mags and reselling the 40 rounder to make more profit.

I would cycle it sevral times to see if it is smooth.  Also check for canted front sights. (That would be the most important issue.)

Quoted:
ober, he's referring to a 74. no such thing as a 40...just the much more rare 45 rpk mag.

the 74 comes with a 30 and a 10.

look for crooked sights. if the front leans off to the side more than a degree or so...pass it by.

trigger slap is a painful reality with the sar's. lose the oem fire control group and get on board the train with an rsa set of parts ($60 at midway).

Anyone have a link to Midway ??

5SubSLR5,  I don't know Midway's web address, but The Sportsman Guide sells the RSA FCG for $59.97.

The link below will take you to it.

Nice price for the ability to look it over carefully. Siderail should be parallel to the bbl/receiver, or darned close. Sights and gas tube should all be nicely aligned. A major hangup in the cycling of the action (but some is normal) is a sign of a crooked US part gas piston.

Enjoy!
