guys. i just bought a AR15 RRA. i love it just plan on using it for coyote hunting. now i want to buy a cheap AK. JUST FOR SHOOTING CANS, TARGETS etc. i want to just run the cheap ammo through it like wolf, and clean it once a year if it needs in or not. i bought a cheap 3 x 9 scope at a grage sale today for 15.00 that i want to put on it. this is just a gun to shoot out at my property, nothing fancy, just something that will lay the lead out, 500 rounds a weekend. ha ha. what brand or type would you buy ? also 223 or 7 x 39 cal. it really does not matter to me just one that will funticion every time i pull the trigger dirty or not. thanks. marty

You sound like a candidate for the Romanian/Century SAR series. They run anywhere from 290-350 from the major suppliers.  SAR-1 for 7.62, SAR-3 for .223.  Obviously the recoil is a lot lighter on a .223, but I think the 7.62x39 round is best suited for shooting "stuff" as it produces more interesting damage to most objects that don't allow much for the .223s tumble and yaw effects.

martyd,
you appear (from your post) the type clown that shouldn't own a gun.

5sub5lr5.... what is your problem ? have you had to much sugar today ? SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SHOT YOUR GUN 500 TIMES ON A WEEKEND ? just want a gun that i can shoot cheap, and not worry about if it rains on it like my 1500.00 RRA. MARTY

I vote for the SAR-1 in 7.62 x 39 also.

Get one of the newer production rifles, the wood is getting better and there seem to be less front sight base and gas block "canting" with them.

Here's a great site for Romanian AKs:

Hard to beat a hand picked SAR. Assuming 100yds, groups of 5 expect 4" in 7.62 and 2" in 5.56 with rest and scope. Make your own choice about bullet mass, trajectory over 150 yds (7.62 is not flat), ammo cost, groups. I suggest the MTK75 mount (about $35) which fits on the side rail and has integral 1" rings, assuming your scopes eye relief is compatible.
If you get the SAR3, stock up on Weiger mags, and plan on a Red Star Arms hammer (Century uses a SAR2 hammer which ain't quite right in the SAR3).
