That. If you had to move and could carry your rifle and mags, how many mags? What would you carry them in? The German mag pouches (rain pattern) look good because of the price but 4 mags does not seem like enough to me, and 8 would be heavy as fuck I think. Whatcha got?

I have a chest rig that can hold 9 and two drums ... and that's more heavy than practical. I would say 30 round mags, 6 on the chest 1 in the rifle and a few extra mags in your bug out bag /ruck sack.

7 mags total.  I have a vest and molle pouches left over from my army days I'd carry them in.

I don't think I'll ever have to worry about this.

I can carry about 2000 rounds of 5.45x39 and 6 mags.

Six rounds in my wheelgun and a cowboy hat and I'm good to go.  I learned that on The Walking Dead.

7 mags. If I need more than that, I wasn't going to make it anyway.

Yep, until their friends starts kickin at the door and you got one bullet left (I'm sure he got at least 12 rounds strapped somewhere on his belt).

Well there's a differance between how much I COULD carry, and how much I WOULD.

Weight-wise, I could carry a heckuva lot.       For the heckuvit, I tried one setup: LBE Harness+2 quad mag pouches+chest rig+2 drum pouches slung=570 rounds of 7.62X39.      Managable...clumsy as heck and not at all worthwhile in my opinion, but doable.

I've got two setups I would use:
#1. A light/normal load.  that would be 4+1 30 round mags.  Either a chinese 4 pouch, single stack, or a quad pouch on the belt.   Truthfully, I doubt there will be any need, even in SHTF, to need more than 150 rounds.    Possible, but highly unlikely.

#2.  If I should be expecting trouble:  8+1 30 round mags in a LBE setup.

#3. Actually a third: Whenever I excercise, on a run, etc.  I carry 6 mags in a chest rig+a drum in my gun.  I figure the extra weight is a plus when keeping in shape

I really wouldn't plan on carrying more than 270 rounds.  I CAN add more, but for the most part, unless you got a full team with you, any fight involving 300+ rounds will mean you're hit/killed/out of the fight before they're all gone.

My vest carries 8 mags. If I need more then that I am probably screwed. I keep lots more at home though

Got 8 on my vest
1 in rifle
Few hundred extra in a backpack

My SHTF loadout includes my AR and a sidearm. I only have 1 AR and a pile of AKs, but for the sake of easy ammo access, I would be forced to take the AR.

I would carry 3 mags on the warbelt, plus 1 in the rifle. I'd carry my sidearm with 2 spare mags and 1 loaded.

This would be good enough for any defensive scenario. By the time I've fired 120 rounds, the fight is probably over one way or another, or I'll have a chance to leave.

Bear in mind, my emphasis would be on leaving. I have a family to look after and take care of. If I was on my own in the SHTF scenario, I would be a little more aggressively armed with more ammo.

Either way, more ammo would be carried in a back back or vehicle.

Chinese 6-mag chest rig +1 in the rifle. Ruck carries 6 more empty mags and 200 rds. in an SKS bandolier. Yeah, it's heavy but if you have to the ruck can be dropped to lighten the load. Tried the E German pouches and even with LBE was way heavy. If I get into anything requiring  410 rds. it would be nothing short of a miracle if I made it out.

PSA: For those running the chinese chest rigs .... Go to the local surplus store and pick up a pair of the WWII era general purpose shoulder pads. They slip right onto the chinese chest rigs and spread the load more evenly so the strap doesn't dig into your shoulder when fully loaded. Weight isn't too bad with the 3-mag rigs but you will notice it with the 6-mag version if you wear it for any length of time.

...and what? What's the scenario, where are we going? Staying around the homestead of light duty, or leaving in the middle of the night with your family to a safe spot. Mostly inside vehicles, on foot? TSHTF is a pretty broad statement.

My Bulgy 7.62 Krink works like rifles in the movies......it has a never-ending 30-round magazine with unlimited bullets.
But seriously, I'd only gonna carry a 4-cell mag pouch (120 rounds) on my person. But I would, of course, have an 50 cal ammo can full of extra rounds back where ever the rest of my crap was.

in a SHTF situation...what is the average number of opponents ?
Link Posted: 2/14/2012 11:04:25 PM EDT
[#20]
Depending on the situation and precieved threat four to twelve mags. Carrying other gear, food, water, socks, etc. three mags plus one in the gun. Going out to pick a fight or end a fight with someone, carrying nothing but a good snack and a little water twelve mags.

With my Z.O.M.B.I.E(Zoidberg's on my block, I'm engaging) bandoleer on I can carry six 30-rnd AK-74 mags, and six 14-rnd P14.45 pistol mags. I don't feel the need for so many pistol mags, so two of the slots are filled with a pocket knife sharpener, and my Leatherman Surge multitool.

I have a wife and an elderly mother who doesn't travel well, so we'll be sitting low and very quiet for as long as we can before making a break for our BOL.

I figure if I can't do it with the 180 rounds of 7N6 and 57 rounds of .45 that I'll be carrying on my person + all the extra loaded mags in the rig, spare ammo, and other assorted weapons I'll have with us... I will have done something seriously wrong.

If that's the case, the surviving bad guys will have definitely EARNED whatever they get from me.

I ran my last class with my FAL with 6 mags in the rig and 1 in the gun. Plenty comfy. This same rig can accommodate the AK , AK74, or AR mags too (I love the taco!) so it can be used for all. I have a good stash of ammo at home, hopefully any SHTF situation I would be able to keep most of it, but that's another reason why America is so great, there's guns and ammo everywhere.

Hmmmm.... SHTF huh ? I guess all I need is one bullet, nuff said

Just kidding!!!! So nobody get all preachy.

I would have to assess the situation at hand and go from there, to many variables.Hhowever I believe being able to adapt and think on your feet is better than playing rambo with 1/2 ton of ammo on your back.

Do yall have any opions on this? Army Surplus Vest

I am wondering if it holds 6 AK mags since it has M16 mags listed.

I would not be bugging out as far as I can plan ahead, my current location is pretty sustainable with good neighbors (for now). I would like to carry a fair amount of ammo if I was protecting a cattle heard from looters or whatever you want to call them. Obviously cattle would be an important resource to keep alive.

1 mag in the rifle, 8 in the vest and 10 mags in assault pack. Total: 570 rounds.  If I use more than that at a one time without resupplying I am up the creek.

Ammo??  Pffftttt.

The only things coming with me if I'm ever on the run are a few granola bars, some water, and my "Best Of" compilation edition of Penthouse Letters.

Won't work with AK mags. I and several buddies have those in your link and while they do hold the AR mags the AK mags are taller and shaped different so they don't fit.

Pack will have 5 full mags. Chest rig will have 3. Pistol will have two spares too. And enough loose ammo to reload 1/2 the mags I carry.

You won't be alive after 90 rounds of gun fight if you are the only one defending. So ....

Ding ding ding.   The right answer.   You will either be ambushed or you
be ambushing.  It will be decided quickly.

My Blackhawk chest rig is set up for 4 primary and 2 pistol.  So 150rds of 7.62x39 and 36rds of 9x18.  I may throw some extra in the pack but idk.  I'd rather be light and fast to GTFO of conflicts.

I always figured 5 in the vest, one in the gun and 4 in pouchs around my belt (and about a case in the truck if I can still use it and dont have to ditch the vehicle)

The wife said she'd carry extra ammo for me ;)

I hike fairly regularly with 10 full mag for the rifle and 5 for the sidearm so I know that is doable with room for some water and other essentials.

There sure is a lot of defeatism around here. " Oh well, I'm probably not going to live that long if it gets that bad anyway."

Screw that! I know the odds of survival get a lot smaller as the round count goes up but I'm going with an attitude of kicking those odds in the ass and surviving this shit.
