Has anyone ever tried forward mounting a Kobra  or other Russian red dot?  I have read some fore vs. rear mounting arguments before (mostly hypothetical/theoretical), but none that mentioned Russian optics.  Likewise, I have heard good things about Russian optics, but no fore vs. rear mount compairison.  I hope to get a custom Saiga conversion built soon this is an option that I am considering.  I think it looks pretty sweet, plus it doesn't interfere with removal of the reciever cover.  I've heard some good things about fore mounting, even from servicemen in Iraq, but not really any negative.

PureEnergy on this board is a few blocks from me, and has shared his AR with a goose-neck carry handle mount and Kobra at some plate shoots. Works very well. Going more fwd reduces the effective moa of the dot, nothing else changes.

This does not apply to the PK-AS, which is red/black dot with the dot part of the glass. This model has an eye relief of 3-4", so a fwd mount will not work. All other red dots I am aware of are fine to mount fwd.

The screen is of sufficient size then?  Target aquisition is decent?

Yes, and the hoop does not get in the way with a different view either.
