There's several videos of how crappy 5.56 is against windshields, but have not found a single test with 5.45

So whats superior in a gel block behind a windshield M855 or 7n6?

556/.223 is because it has the benefit in the US market of having bullet development; tumbling is a poor wounding mechanism compared to available fragmenting/expanding 556/.223.

Not entirely related but years ago I tested penetration in wood, comparing factory loaded 7n6 to resized M-855 projectiles loaded into 5.45 cases. The 5.45/M-855 handily out-penetrated the 7n6. The 7n6 started to tumble only a few inches into the wood (stacked pine boards).

I would expect the same vs. auto glass as the airspace in the tip of a 7n6 would likely allow the jacket to deform quickly and destabilize the projectile.

If you need to poke through windshields, you want a barrier blind bullet.

So the 7n6 is likely much better terminally on flesh due to the tumbling, I would assume.

If you are into AKs and want to shoot through windshields why wouldn't you choose 7.62x39?

Not precisely.

Under what conditions? Range etc?

Well if the M855 frags then it should be much better but frag is inconsistent even at full velocity. Meanwhile the 7n6 seems to tumble consistently.

So frag < tumbling < clean through

I own zero 5.45 and have never even fired one but heavily invested in 5.56, including AK's. I like the idea of the 7n6 over M855 and M193 over both assuming velocity to frag.
