Of the 7.62 x 39 commercial ammo that is currently available, what is the best for general purpose use?
Who has it for less? Thank you |
Golden Tiger seems to be the best value, I buy mine form ammoconnection.com for 195.00 shipped.
I saw a post about this over at the highroad. I recall everyone liking the golden tiger stuff. Payday cant come soon enough, expecially because I have no job. |

Son of a bitch. I just bought Wolf.
Just a reason to bump fire it all and replace with Tiger, eh? |
not at all... wolf black box is just fine. idk what everyone bitches about as i have had maybe 3-4 misfires in the thousands upon thousands of rounds i shot. only gripe is the red laquer builds up after HEAVY use. nothing a good cleaning with an aircompressor wont fix... |
shhhhh
you are disturbing my rationale that leads to me buying some GT |
My rationale is usually cheaper=what I order. We're not talking match grade 308 here :P

I don't even try to rationalize my ammo purchasing anymore. As for the best gen. purpose 7.62x39 ammo out there? I think Golden Tiger is the way to go. I'm sitting on 4K of it at the moment. I've got another 1K of black box Wolf I use to blast with, and about 1K of other ammo (Wolf Military Classic and Barnaul Silver Bear) stashed away. I'm saving the Golden Tiger for last. I'll get around to shooting it eventually though. It seems that whenever I go shoot the AK I need to replace whatever I shoot x2, so my stash only keeps growing. It's getting expensive though...but I've got 3 mouths to feed. |

Recently tried some Golden Tiger. I am hooked. I only have 550 rds of GT. The rest is Wolf and Military Classic, Saspan and a little Yugo.
Need more GT. The other one I like is Barnaul Russian Zinc Silver FMJ. All of it shoots fine. |
I thought the Wolf military classic HP was the best stuff to get because of it having the 8m3 or m83 bullet or whatever? I thought I read on here the bullets were actually expanding and fragmenting?
Very true, I've got some of the Mil. Classic hollow point on hand myself. Fact is that the Mil. Classic HP is a little harder to find and it usually costs a little more. Also, in terms of a "general purpose" round, the full metal jacket Golden Tiger probably fits the bill a little better. That being said, if I could get Mil. Classic HP for the same price as what I can get Golden Tiger FMJ for I would be loading up on Mil. Classic HP. But keep in mind I already have 4-5K of FMJ. As is true with most things, you should "get both". |
Yeah, I have a few cases of HP and SP, plus cases of old Yellow box Norinco. I don't want to shoot much of that unless I have to so the GT will get a good bit of use. |

I'd like to try some Golden Tiger. Who makes it? I'm feeling lucky to be sitting on some 2K rds of Norinco SC from the pre-Klinton days amd another 2-3k of lead core. I'm not burning it up these days. I was getting it for about $100 a case in 1990. Should have been stocking up on 5.56. I have one SKS and 3 AKs (2 Poly Legends). One is a NM and I've been wondering what kind of ammo I could buy or reload to wring out the best groups with it and if scoped, what kind, brand of scope mount fits the Poly NM "rail". Can anyone brag honestly about accuracy out of any AK out to 300 yards? Show me the money...................................email if you can.

Try, Copes Distributing, their selling here on the EE. Their out of Ohio ,I bought some shoots good no problems. As to the Manufacturer of Golden Tiger the box I'm looking at says Federal State Enterprise "Vympel", Russia.
I have shot GT and Wolf MilClas and I cant tell any difference. I shoot at targets about a 100 yds and both hit what I am aiming at.
AIM was out of GT for the moment so I went with Wolf MilClassic. About the same price too. |
I use to fire alot of Sapson I never had any issues with it. I never see it in many chats or even on the market any more what's the deal? I use to get it for $65.00 a case of 1000 rounds from the Lima gunshow in Ohio years ago! never any problems.?
My Yugo and Romy rifles like Wolf MC. These are still within my price range for range shooting.
Haven't tried the GT yet, but if it's similar to the MC I'll definetly load my Romanians with it. |
Pffft...The only reason I need to buy ammo: Guns need food, therefore, guns get food. |
I like the GT better than the MC.. |
I'm gonna try a few boxes then. Darn!!!! Just yesterday I order a bunch of Rom and Hung mags from Copes. I heard they have a good deal on the Tiger ammo. |
I've got GT, MC, Barnaul zinc-plated (aka Silverbear), and Hotshot in inventory. The Barnaul is my favorite, but all of it goes bang reliably. I don't get hung up on any one brand.
I haven't shot GT at all, but I know plenty of people that do. It seems to be a good quality round overall. I use Wolf black for my gp shooting, and it works pretty damn well. I think I've got about 4-5K rounds of the 122 grn jhp and at least 8K rounds of the 122 grn fmj. Well, maybe a bit more of each b/c I forgot my loaded mags... Anyway, I use a shit load of Wolf black and have 99.99% success with it. |

I too bought a case when it was cheap. Excellent ammo. |
I also like the Barnaul zinc/nickel plated steel case.

Thought some of you might be interested. I ran these strings over a ProChrono, set ~15 feet ahead of the muzzle. All are based on 10 round strings.

It runs on average about 100fps slower than wolf black box. I have some military classic but didn't think to chrono it. I will do so next time. I've also heard that the mil classic bullets perform better on soft targets, but don't know that. That's why I was developing those loads using soft point projectiles. |

Back in the day, I had a Polytech NM model. I never found a scope mount to fit the rail on the receiver. Iron sight accuracy was OK, but not significantly better than the Clayco Ak I'd had before the Polytech. Nice rifle though, and I am sorry I ever sold it. At the time, Federal AE was supposed to be the most accurate ammo...according to several writers. Now, back to the discussion. dvo |

wish we could still get Sapsan, even at current prices I would buy it, Wolf Mil Class HP is not quite the same
PLEASE DO. That's some really good dope right there, and deserves it's own thread when you can add the MC to the mix. |

IDK, I never had any problems with WOLF other than it being very dirty. But I havent bought/shot any WOLF in a while because I have 5000 rounds of Yellow box black case Norinco and another 8000 rounds of Norinco/China Sports copper washed Soft Point. But if I had to, I wouldnt hesitate to buy WOLF again! Out here where I live Sportsmans Warehouse still has it priced at $4.99 a box which isnt bad for those that dont buy in bulk.
At $4.99 a box its cheaper than dirt compared to what I have to pay to shoot my .50 cal Desert Eagle lol! I pay $1.83 a round for the alright stuff and over $2 a round for the good stuff, now thats really expensive! Honestly though man, the best and cheapest way to purchase ammo is to go through your local classified adds, find a guy thats selling a gun chambered in the calibre that your wanting ammo for, call him, and ask him if he has any ammo for said gun that he wants to sell. I have litterally hit the jackpot a few times by doing this! 2 weeks ago I did just what im telling you to do, called an add in my local classified adds that a guy was selling an AR-15 in and ended up picking up 1500 rounds of .223 ammo for $200. |
I've shot around 3000 rounds of black box Wolf with no malfuction what so every. Now I'm buying as much MC as I can but when I buy ammo I grab whats there. HP and SP are the way to go IMHO |

Does anybody know if the golden tiger or the Barnaul has actual copper bullets that will pass the magnet test? Not like the wolf copper washed steel coated. Thanks
Okay, so if given the choice with the same cost per 1000, which would you choose?
Golden Tiger FMJ Wolf Military Classic HP Has the HP been known to lead to any misfeeds? I seem to recall having an issue with some HP (unknown source) maybe 10 years ago, and I haven't tried any more since. Is accuracy / terminal performance any different between the two or has anyone actually tried the HP to see if it expands worth a damn? I haven't bought 7.62x39 in maybe 8 years, but my supply is down and I want to stock back up to hedge against rising prices. Saleen |
