I have done it 1000's of times in both of mine .  Should post in the ammunition forum for more replies.

I can always tell when a person I just bought a used upper from was using steel case, though.  A chunk of the finish is knocked off the very end of the brass deflector.  I shoot mine a lot with brass cases (never tried import ammo in .223), and all I get is a brass-colored spot there (no finish wear).

Slightly irritating to your buyers of your used stuff, but in no way a deal breaker for using cheap steel-cased ammo.

I have not had any problems with steel case ammo, except the already mentioned wear on the deflector. To avoid this, I put a piece of thick tape on my deflector, prior to any use with steel case ammo.

In my 24" bull barrel, i often get 1"-2" groups with wolf at 100yds, that makes for good cheap practice, and a lot of dead jackrabbits, and coyotes....
