The only part that needs to go through a FFL is the lower receiver. Whether you are buying a stripped lower, or an assembled lower, it goes through the FFL.
Are there any specific brands you are interested in or leaning towards? ETA- I think its a VERY smart move building it up as a basic weapon. Your choice on optics may very well change from a scope (which is useless in close) to an Aimpoint or Eotech. |

No, no specific brands, as I am leaning towards some input from this board on what/who, etc.. for that. Like I said, I'm ready to start, and want to drop a couple of hundred now - Just need direction on how/where to get started. Someone recommedned starting with the outfit in KC, and getting a stripped lower, but I looked over the website, and it shows lowers out of stock.

One of the problems you will find is that most of the dealers are out at Vegas for the Shot Show.
Mega and Stag are very high quality lowers, and are available for $90-100. RRA is a good lower parts kits, and is roughly $55-60 CMT/Stag is probably the nicest LPK and is about $70 DPMS has a decent LPK, and they are usually the price of the RRA. www.carricozarmory.com is a good source for the above, and he is not going to the show this year. Email him or call, but remember that this is not his fulltime job, so sometimes it take a little while for him to email back. He is a great guy to deal with, and I recommend him because I know he takes good care of people. |

Yes, the Equipment Exchange(EE) is a large forum. Take a look through the different areas to get a good idea on pricing. The EE is in the upper right section of each page, just click on the button that say "EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE".

Thanks for that link. He has Mega complete lower halves with RRA stocks for a little over 2 something - are there any pro's/cons to buying one this way?

personally if i was you i would get the complete rifle kit from model one sales. But make sure you buy a different lower parts kit than the one that comes with it as that one is junk, but other than the kit all you would need is the stripped lower. Now all you have to do is decide what barrel profile and length that you want, flat top (better for mounting scope) or the carry handle top. MODEL 1 Sales KITS

for the complete rifle you would be into it aproximately $600 dollars. That should leave enough left over in your budget to buy a scope and possibly even a railed forearm or some mags and ammo.

It would be very accurate, but it would be very heavy and nothing like what you said you were looking for. Its not worth buying if its not what you really want.

I guess it would be average, it certainly wouldn't be what I would call a great buy, especially without knowing its history. You can't even put a front sight on that thing, which means the only thing it will be good for is throwing a scope on.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest a Stag upper from ssl.perfora.net/www.nwtactical.net/sess/utn;jsessionid=1543ebadba7db58/shopdata/index.shopscript That looks to be a real good upper and the price is good also.
Stickman already covered the lower parts pretty well. Almost all lowers are good now and he told you about the various lower parts kits. I don't think you'll be happy with that big barrelled oly upper. That's kind of a sniper/varmint type deal, the first picture you showed was more of a general purpose/ defensive carbine-which I think it a better AR for most people, particularly as a first one. |

looking through a local classified today, and there's a BM complete new lower for 250. Guy makes mention that will have to provide eligibility papers..? (what is that), and FFL will need to be involved.
How does it work buying the lowers online when you have to provide FFL? Guessing you get a local business to run you through, and then mail an original inked copy to the seller????? Is this right? - Is it a hassle, is it common practice? |

People do this all the time. You can buy a lower for $100, a LPK for $60, and a decent stock for $70. When you can get everything new, you have got to figure out if its worth it or not for you.

You do not want a ban model, they do not have a threaded end for a flash suppressor, or a bayonet lug. The weapons tend to look goofy without those things. However, if the price is DIRT cheap, it may be worth getting.
DSA is more well known for their FAL products, and are fairly recent in the AR15 market. Is it possible he said or meant DPMS? |

If you go to gunsamerica.com you will find a "search for transfer dealers" button. Click that and put in your area code and it will list FFLs that have said they will do transfers, usually for $ 20. You do need to call and check as the list is not updated, but that is how I found the ffl I currently use. Basically you call and make sure he's willing to do it, go over and give him $ 20 or whatever he wants, take his signed ffl, then go buy the lower from Eagle Firearms or Denny's Guns or whereever and send the dealer the ffl you have. They then ship your lower to your dealer and you go pick it up from your dealer like any other firearm.
Personally I always give him an extra $ 5 or so when I get it, or I make sure to go in and buy some stuff, Hoppes or whatever, once in awhile also to keep on his good side. There's a Gander Mountain about 20 minutes down the highway from my guy now so I am concerned about him, he can't buy some guns wholesale as cheap as Gander Mountain or Wal Mart has them.

Here's where I'm at.
Have a lpk ordered and on its way. Have a 4-pos stock ordered and on its way Local dealer has RRA stripped lowers, but they're 150... Have located some internet sales for around 110, but then 20 bucks for FFL service.... I may just buy the RRA from the local. I'm basically trying for a build as cheap as I can. Have seen allot of posts where people are saying they have pieced them together for 300 or so... Of course I don't have any spare surplus parts, nor do I have any buddies that are into AR's - (on my list of people to meet though...lol for just that reason)
Right now, I am rationalizing my purchases based on the cost of an RRA lower with stock (290 locally) or 240 and then the 20 dollar ffl service plus shipping.. So maybe 275. |

Yes, that will work fine. All you need to complete a lower receiver is a Lower Parts Kit (LPK). Glad to see things are moving along for you.

Pretty sure of the answer here, but need to be 100% I see some talk about big hole and small hole stuff.... Will a Colt upper work with a RRA lower, or are there more details to it than that?

Some Colt uppers have different size holes and won't work with a regular lower without an adapter.

OK, here's where I'm at. I got a little impatient and bought a carbon upper. Had a little trouble getting them together today, but have it now. Going to the range tomorrow, and will report back with a function "ok" no-k" then.
Assembled from: RRA lower stripped - 137 RRA/RB precision lpk - 56 4-pos. stock from EE -25 Carbon Upper from EE - 300 518 as is. (not including the red-dot) - Guessing I may could have saved a bit more if, I'd waited and pick on some deals and pieced the upper together. Going to try and post pictures on here.. My OL said don't get my face if your putting these on the internet.. (btw, she came home and caught me with it in complete state this evening in the garage - Last week, she seen the lpk, and ask what it was, and I replied just some pieces for a long term rfle build I'm starting... 6 days later there's a complete rifle. (I'm cooking tonight) |

I shot it today, and it was allot smoother and sound that I imagined. I shot it a few times at maybe 50 yards with the iron/stock sights, and was shooting pretty good groups although sites were shooting a little to the right - Adjusted the iron sights, and then tried the red-dot. It shot really good groups, but high and to the right - Didn't have time to adjust on them, but will do when I return.
Now, my big question is: Where is the best, and cheapest ammo.. (Yes - the two together) Who has the best deal on good ammo? Thank You. |
