I must admit that I don't care for the look of stainless barrels, particularly on ARs with standard forearms. On a recent build I used a stainless barrel and sanded it slightly, degreased and used Brownell's Teflon/Moly to paint it and then baked it according to instructions.

First, can stainless be painted? i.e. will anything really stick to it?

Secondly, if its possible to paint stainless, what's the best stuff to use?

it helps to bead blast it first

I've used Brownells Aluma-Hyde II on two different stainless barrels. It works great, just follow the directions for curing and temperature. Several thin layers every 2-5 minutes work better than one thick layer (like any painting):
