Do I have to remove the front sight base from the barrel to install a freefloat ris?

Yes, RIS is the older of the KAC systems, suggest ya go w/ the RAS, FYI here: www.quarterbore.com/kac/kacrisras.html

Or the new RAS II which does NOT require FSB removal, see it on the EE.
