I shoot 64 grain Winchester Ranger Law Enforcement ammo (in copious quantities) as well as Federal XM-193, and to be honest, I cannot tell the difference in accuracy between by 3 Colt 1/7 twist, and my two Colt 1/9 twist guns. I think that the 1/9 vs. 1/7 twist debate is highly overated.

I think the 1:9 is probably more "standard"...a lot of manufacturers choose that twist for their regular HBAR type rifles. It'll handle a broader range of lighter and heavier bullets, but it's not as good at the really heavy stuff as 1:7. I've shot 69gr Sierra Match Kings in several 1:9 rifles with success, and I can't see I'd need to go any heavier for anything as I'm not doing any really long range shooting.
YMMV, though, and if you need really heavy bullets for 600 yard shooting, the 1:7 is probably the ticket. For general all around use, though, the 1:9 is ideal. |
