Hi, I have decided to build a AR and buy one as a collectable (SP-1). I would like to build a CAR style AR.

I have seen that others have had good comments about J&T and they offer the CAR kit as well as the M4 kit (links to both are below). The M4 kit is ~$100 more, but the weapon seems to be better on paper. Can any of you please tell me which would actually be the better choice for me? The $100 is not a significant issue and it appears the M4 kit inlcudes the tactical brake and the CAR kit has it as a $50 add-on.

Also are there any obvious upgrades for this weapon that I should ask for up front or is it just as good to buy the stock choices that J&T offer? (I would imagine that much of this is personal preferences and without having owned the weapon, I have no basis for choosing options)

from the J&T websight these two kits are basically the same, except for the M4 buttstock and segmented barrel. So , what is your vision of your rig?[smoke]

I advise against buying an SP1 and building a gun off of it, because the pin sizes are wrong. Also, consider Rock River Arms. They make an excellent product, with better options than J and T.

On the other hand, the SP1 quality cannot be beat. You could find a large pin upper to build it on if you want an A2, since they're still available if you look around, or just use the A1 upper from the SP1 (nothing wrong with an A1 arrangement in my opinion, and A1 sights are foolproof).

The SP1 doesn't have the fence or reinforcements of the later model, but they are the best quality lowers ever made, and all the other pins, etc is milspec size. I prefer them to the later Colt prebans with goofy fire control pin sizes.

Resale is a factor too, if you ever want to sell it. A Colt will always be more desirable than other brands (imo anyway), and therefore will bring you more money, all things equal. Also no question about whether it's really preban or not.
