Any decent rechargeable batteries on the market?

I use surefire lights for work and burn through batteries it seams.   Any rechargeable options or should I buy a new rechargeable light.

As they do for me also.

Look for 18650 based flashlights and buy some high quality cells e.g. NCR and a charger.
They do thousands of cycles without much loss - essentially the same cells that are used in power tools or electric cars.

I use Nitecore rechargables and their D2 charger, which can charge multiple types of batteries, including 18650.

In general, I have had much better luck with 18650s than rechargeable 123s (which are 16530, I think)

The brands I have tried have been Nitecore and Olight

One thing I have noticed is that the rechargeable 123's do not hold a charge well if they are stored in very cold temps

The above is anecdotal, not experimental.

Oky.  Maybe I will pick up an o light handheld.  I have a stream light micro that works well but doesn’t have enough throw for looking down in deep lift stations.

I just had a friend ask about using rechargeable LiIon in CR123 based optics and lights. I had to recommend against them for the higher voltages and lower capacities.

It turns out the low capacity is not a problem, as they can be recharged daily/weekly. Looking deeper, the ones with a built in microUSB charge port are listed as 3v instead of 3.7v. Has anyone tried these in Cr123 gear?

Rechargeable 123’s

If your using a single cell 123 light I would go with the above. If your using a 2 cell 123 light I would go with the below.

2 cell replacement.

I have a few Fenix ones that are serving me well.

They're 16340's.  Ive been using EBL brand rechargeable in my work light for the better part of four years now without any issue and the light gets used heavily.  I charge up a set on the first day of shift and it will last my entire rotation without issue.  I cycle through a set of four, ie rotating the two each week.  Four years later and they're still running strong.  I have yet to actually run a set down which is pretty awesome and a little surprising given how much I use my light.  Granted, the majority of the illumination I use is on a low setting on the light.

Its such a cheap experiment it hardly matters.  If your light cant take an 18650 then give the 16340's a whirl.

The best 16340 out there for capacity and higher discharge currents/low voltage sag at the moment are the Vapcell INR 800mah that have 7A max current. These don't require a protection circuit. If you just need dinky 123 level replacement, the have an 850mah 3A 16340 and a protected version.

I use my 16340 to power a light that needs the higher power capability of a 3.7v battery vs the lower capability of 6V worth of low output 123 cells. I could use 18650 or a 16650 to power that head but wanted a compact form factor. so went 16340 in a single cell Arisaka 300 body.

There used to be lots of poor 16340 cells. Nowadays they are much better, just be sure your device can deal with the higher voltage.

If they cant but you have the space for the length you can get 3V output 860mah 16340.
