What do I need to look for? Period type, of course.

I just picked up a nylon sling similar to the canvas Garand sling. If I remove the clip at the rear is it what I want to use? If not at least it'll be right at home for the M16a1 kit sitting in the closet.

I think we need to find where UXB is hiding.

I have some interesting friends that did interesting things back in the day. I'll ask them what they used, and we can see if their world was the same as standard issue with the slings.

Early nylon M16A1 sling is appropriate:

I did have the opportunity to use a boot lace as a field expedient sling once and it worked just fine...

Awesome! Thanks uxb! I couldn't remember if that pic had a sling in it or not. And I don't have saved.

I found mine in a $1.00 misc. parts box at my gunsmith's. And then he gave it to me free*.

Brand spanking new. All I had to do was send it through the laundry to get the funk out of it.

* - Well, not quite. He asked me to bring my preban Colt by so he could measure how far back to thread the muzzle. 5/8" - .625". He's been getting some requests and was thinking he was threading back a bit too much.

It's identical to the M1 Garand cotton web sling, including the buckles, clasp and hook, only made out of a green nylon web. It's not the black nylon web sling with two buckles that is more recent. I've heard that one refered to as the "silent sling." My 1979 SP1 came with this style, and I imagine it may still be current with the new rifles as well.

I believe the standard M1 sling would be as correct. I have a field manual for the XM177E2 and it shows and lists "M1 sling" as one of the accessories. The standard M1 sling was the most common M16 sling so I suppose it wound up on all the "shorties" as well.

Green nylon, basically like the old WWII Garand sling. We were still issued these in the early 80’s.

I have a few of the garand style slings, but mine are in desert tan. These are made of the cotton/canvas material instead of nylon. The label doesn't specify M16xx use, only "Sling, Small Arms / Day (Desert)" and "Level A 4/91" along with some NSN numbers. So this type sling is in use at least up to the Desert Storm era.

I couldn't find the vendor (advertises in Shotgun News - might be Charlie's Surplus) but I have seen several photographs of the double-carbine-hook sling; it's like a duffle bag or M60 sling, about 2" wide, with snap-hooks at both ends, and it was commonly used as a sling for the XM177 types, with one hook snapped into or around the front sight base.

I think this is the arrangement used on the statue of Dick Meadows at Ft. Bragg.
