Is there a legend that highlights different manufacturers?  I feel like there should be, if one doesn't exist already.

"AF" is for Alcoa Forge. I have the same mark on my carry handle (and M4 upper, for that matter).  Check this link, it's for upper markings, but may shed some light...

Thanks for that link.

Alcoa Forge is stated to be for Colt although the Symbol "AF" is listed to be Bushmaster.  Not sure what to think.

On my carry handle's production code, "AF1" the right side the 'A' shares the left side of 'F' ...

I bought it second hand and it's as stout as they come but I would still like to know what manufacturer produced it - just cause!

You can't tell what manufacturer it belongs to by the forge code.  The only thing you can do is measure the height of the shelf the sight base sits on.  IIRC, .84" is Colt and .80" is everybody else.
