Is there a decent quality alternative to the old Colt 3-4 power scope in the same size package? If there is, I'm not aware of it. And no, I don't want a Chicom knockoff. At a price point of $200 or less I would think there would be a good market. Nothing fancy, just a scope w/ integral QD mount. I even went so far as to contact Leupold to suggest it, but heard nothing in reply.

Yes

At a price point of $200 or less

Whoops no.  There are nice ones in the $500-$700 range (Compact ACOGs).

+1

ACOG - worth every penny IMHO.

Let me clarify. Just a simple fixed 3-4 power scope. No lighted reticle, BDC or other bells and whistles. Just a compact scope like the old Colt models. NOT a $1000 scope. It seems that if Leupold can sell the Rifleman series or whatever it's called for $175 they should be able to do this. Surely there's a good market for it.

You're right there is a market for a GOOD sub $200 AR-15 scope with a built in (low profile) mount.  Unfortunetly I don't know any company that makes one.

Not what you are looking for, but you could do a Leupold 4x setup for $250-275 or so. ($200 for scope, then you need some rings and a mount.)

Mint cond. Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5x20 with rings went for $225 shipped on the EE last month. (Would require carry handle mount).

what's wrong with the colt scope.  I had it and loved it.  fantastic scope IMO, can be had for 150-200 used often on teh EE.  perfect eye relief, probably the lwest height a carry handle scope can be, BDC for the rifle....  Only thing that comes to mind at low power carry handle sub 200 dollar scopes would be

ATN 5x33 but no integral QD mount,

Letherwood Leatherwood 1.5-4.5x20 Camputer A.R.T. Rifle Scope on LEatherwood base (219+30)

Puts the optic too high.  The nice thing about the Colt & Trijicon scopes is the built in mount allows them to mount the eyepiece lower to the carry handle.  If you have to use a mount - then add rings to it the scope sits too high for a comfortable cheek weld (you'll have to buy a cheek piece which prevents you from using the irons).

100%.  Like i said, I think the colt scope was the closest to the CH.  IMO, it gives you the best CH scope cheek weld.

HAKKO produces a scope that appears to have everything you are looking for except for it having an illuminated reticle.  Check it out:
