So far I have two mags that came with the DPMS, and I still need a few more. I was thinking two more 30's and one 20, and of course a bandolier with loaded stripper clips ready to go. Is this enough for a "grab and go" setup?

I guess what I am asking is how many rounds would be enough for a "grab and go" already loaded in the magazines?

Thanks!

I will give you a honest answer.

You should have at a minimum of 20 mags per battle rifle.   I would say at least 6 loaded.

That's what I am doing.  My CAR came with 1 20 and 2 30rd's.  I bought another 20 off of Evilbay and a 40 rounder here at ar15.com.

You need to have at LEAST six ready to go.

I use the rule of 3x, If your loadout consists of 6 mags you should have at least 18 mags for that rifle.

I have 9 in my loadout so I have at least  27. Buy as many as you can, you never know when the next ban will come. I currently have over 50 mags

Heres about the best price going- www.44mag.com/

The "rule of 3X" sounds reasonable with a further amount of mags, followers and springs for when the next Ban comes around.

Only if you can find a Sterling. At a cost of @$90.00+/- it's not worth it. I only use mine for 3-gun.

30-rd mags can be a bit of a pain to shoot with in the prone position; the 40 rd mags would really suck. Plus you're only likely to find aftermarket crapola 40-rd mags. Stick with USGI mags; avoid plastic mags, avoid any steel mags but maybe the British or Singapore made ones...

As for how many do you need? A lifetime's worth. I say at least 20 mags to use, and as many more as you can afford. You can always sell the excess when a ban is threatened and make some money if you feel you have too many.

As for how many mags you want to have ready to go. I'd say at least 7, maybe 10.  Depends on how much weight you can handle if you are going foot mobile. By the time you fire 10 30-rd mags worth, your barrel will be super hot, maybe cooking off rounds. That's per rifle of course.

When you stop asking yourself if you have enough mags.

Minimum?  Whatever you want to make it.

For the past 4 years I got by with 15 mags shared between 3 AR's and an M16.

I recently bought 20 D&H + Magpul mags...

I never felt "undergunned" with the 15 mags, and I don't feel overgunned with the 20 new mags + the original 15.

Quite honestly I just wanted to hear you say that it's a made up number.  Thanks.

IIRC, Q3131A took that pic from someone else's post.  From what he's said... That wasn't near as many as he used to have during the ban.  Something about selling em' off and buying a Kabota tractor... NOt that I pay attention to this site or nothing like that!

Correct. Not my mags. I had about 500 during the peak of the ban which I sold to a local gunstore back when I lived in VA. I took the profit and used it as a down payment on a farm tractor.

I am slowly rebuilding my mag stash, but I still have less than 100.

I thought like that in the early '90s. Bit me in the ass it did. I had been buying mags for about $6-7 NIW. As soon as there was even the hint of a ban, prices went up - to like $15ish. Then as the likelihood of a ban got  greater, prices really went nuts.

The same happened with Black Talon Ammo...when there was talk of a law against it, I bought up several cases of the stuff. People seemed unconcerned about it. Then BAM, Winchester stopped selling it to civvies, and the price doubled overnight. Literally overnight.

I guess my point is this: don't wait til there is talk of a ban; prices will go up, and faster than you'd think.

Robbie, I'm new to the AR-15 scene... but I have found that, when shooting prone (either from a bipod or from the Marine position), a 20 round mag is OK; a 30-round mag is almost too large. A 40 rounder would get in the way. Standing, sitting or kneeling, there isn't a problem.

That said... determine your tactical needs... go from there. Personally I keep a 30 rounder loaded in the rifle  (in condition 2), with another 30 rounder and two 20-rounders available. This is kept ready to "grab and go."

I'm considering a magazine clamp, one that allows a couple of mags to be clamped together, and keep this loaded in my rifle.

My inventory: 2 each 20 and 30 rounders, with an additional 30 and four 20's for the range. But I'm as susceptable to "mag fever" as anyone.
