Thats an awesome stock! what the hell is that? I might have to get one.

The stock is the Magpul M93A.   It's been well-reviewed here.  I took a can of Aluma-Hyde II to its buffer tube.  The "foot" came in tan.

I bought two cases of preproduction back in Feb/March with my upper and I've been reloading the cases on my Dillon 650 since then, hence the VMAX bullets visible in these pictures.

Rumor has it PRI is letting go of small batches of brass to people who can use it.   Try giving them a call.

From your pics it looks like you use the new magazine bodies and old springs/followers/floorplates? Is that right?

Link Posted: 7/20/2004 6:14:23 PM EDT
[#8]
I just updated the 6.8SPC FAQ (tacked here) to reflec this new information.

The conversion kits consist of a new magazine body and replacement follower to convert your old pre-ban AR15 5.56mm magazines to be 6.8-compatible, also in the 15 and 25-round capacities.   This works just like Armalite's deal for AR10 conversion kits.

You could use the old spring and follower from the original pre-ban magazine.  There is no requirement that any part from the old magazine be used in the conversion/rebuild, but to comply with the AWB and the ATF rulings on it, you cannot start with one legitimate (pre-ban) high-cap mag but end up with two high-caps.

Ah, so just go out and buy some nasty, dented, busted-tab USGI range mags then "replace" every single part and crush/keep the original, right?

[#10]
Hal9k,

This has been hashed out before.  Yes.   That is exactly what you can do.   Keep the destroyed original magazine body if you want some proof of the original pre-ban status.

No sense in buying nice preban $50-60 M14 magazines when $15 crappy aftermarket M14 mags will convert just as well to an AR10 mag with Armalite's kit.

2 Questions:

1) Where are  the kits available from?

2) Which is in the rifle?  The 15 or 25?

Thanks nice settup, very nice Vortex.  Good idea.

Will these feed .223 also?

Absolutely.  Just swap out the upper and the magazine.

MSTN has information on the mag kits.

The 15 is in the rifle, and a 15 is the lower of the two NIW.

223?   I haven't tried it yet.    Based on loading a few 5.56 rounds into a mag and looking at it, my guess is yes but poorly.

One other note: Both the 15/25 rnd mags have metal followers. Brouhaha has some pics in the AR section.

MSTN is saying that the replacement magazine bodies and followers are right now just for the customers who bought 6.8 uppers from them.  They said it is due to the current availability.

No word on when they will be selling to customers who bought their 6.8 uppers elsewhere.

Between the increased mag length and ranger floorplate the 25 round mag is pretty big looking- have you had a chance to try it out in an AK mag pouch to see if that would be a better fit than USGI mag pouches?

I don't have any, but I'll try it when I get the chance.

The 15 round mags are a really nice size.

Yes, they are. BTW: They will actually hold 18 and function on a closed bolt.

To answer someone's question (sorry, too lazy to see who asked), yes, they do work w/ 5.56.

Do the 25 rounders hold 28?  I believe brouhaha started a thread about these mags in AR Discussions and said they were 18 and 28 round mags.

How many rounds of 5.56mm ammo with the PRI 10Rnd 6.8SPC mag hold?

Will 77Gn fit or is the OAL too long.

To the second question, the PRI bodies will accept a cartridge OAL of at least 2.315".

my 5.56mm 77Gn OTM are 2.22" OAL. I wonder if they will fit & feed from the PRI mags...

I have fired small numbers of 5.56 (75gr BH) from the PRI mags.

thanks for info on mags and conversion kits I have been wanting to build a 6.8 but have not  been able to find the mags.  in addition to hornaday , lee precision and rcbs will make up dies and wideners reloading supply is carring rem. brass if you can catch some in stock($110 /1000 +s&h) I've heard all orders have been on backorder, hornaday and federal should have some on dealers shelves soon as the local gunshop here, has told me they have the rem. stuff on order and will carey the others as soon as it becomes available or so they've said.

No brass has shipped to anyone yet, AFAIK.  Nor has any ammo made it to distributors.   Yes, some places do list it, but nobody has any yet.

Great post, as always Zak.

Wes came through as promised and I picked up a few conversion mag kits from him as well.  Ran the only 20 rounds I had through, breaking in the barrel.  This thing will shoot.  Now if Rem could only get cases to the distributors...

$156.45 for a case of 200.

Yes, PRI has 10rd mags now.  I have a 5 round PRI mag on the way and they say that there will be 25...28 round (whatever) mags available right after the AWB ends in Sept.

The deal on the 25-28, 15-18 round capacity is this.  The mags can hold more than the number of rounds they will be 100% reliable with.
