Please add your personal experience with IGMAN/HOTSHOT ammunition to this thread. When you do, please give information about:
1) Ammunition used (SS109 only ?) 2) Firearm used in 3) Approximate number of rounds fired. If you have voted in the previous poll, please do NOT vote again. PREVIOUS POLL: 103 total responses 86 had no problems 7 have had minor problems but will use it again. 10 have had major problems and will not use it anymore. There is a very high degree of confidence that the Igman black-tipped ammunition is identical to the HotShot green tipped ammunition. I am trying to solicit only information about your PERSONAL experience with this ammunition. If you haven't used it, then please don't clutter up the thread. Information about proper functioning (or lack thereof) is obviously the most important, but factors such as the accuracy or other peculiarities you've noticed are informative also. If you have had problems with this ammo which were severe enough to cause you to stop using this ammo, then please describe them. |

The previous post was archived, but thanks to the archive server, I was able to retrieve the information:
yoma: Shot 5 boxes through my 20" HB yesterday. No failures of any kind. If I took my time I could keep them all in the 10 ring from bags at 100 yds. I'd say it was well worth the $170 delivered price from AIM. MillerSHO: My beloved Bushmaster has KB'd today using this ammo. I will be putting together a nice pictured post explaining what I've figured out. It could be my AR's fault but the ammo is still a possibility. More to come. AllanSchisel: HotShot 223 at Century. This is great ammo at a great price for SS109 62gr FMJ ammo. It's brass cased and the sealent on the primer does not come off and gum up your rifle. I've shot about 500 rounds out of a Carbon-15 Model 97 with 1 FTF (gun needed some lube). I can't see past 25 yards anymore, so I have a 1.5 x 4.5 scope mounted on it. At 100 yards, lying prone and using my mag pouch as a rest, I was getting 2" to 4 " groups with one 1 1/4" group. BTW, I'm not known for my marksmanship. With a higher magnification and a sandbag rest, this ammo should be sub MOA. At $150/1,000 rounds delivered, this is a great buy. HotShot is made by Igman for Century, the only difference being the packaging. The cheapest I've seen Igman for is $180/1,000 + shipping. Allan Schisel klutz347: I've only shot 200 rounds of it, no problems. I would buy it again. phobia: I have put around 400 rounds through my BM 14.5" M4gery with no problems whatsoever. Seemed alittle dirty to me, but it could have been the bit of CLP I used before firing. Not up to par with IMI and some LC M855 I've shot, but better then all the other SS109 I've shot. Coolio: This past Friday (8-6) I got to the firing range with my chronograph and worked with my handloads. While I was at it I shot some Olin/Winchester M855 and some Ingman "Hot Shot" SS109 62gr. Green Tip. Here's my results (I'm including the Olin/Winchester M855 as something to which to compare the Ingman SS109). Ingman SS109 "Hot Shot" 62gr. Average velocity: 3,059.05 FPS Hi: 3,091.64 FPS Lo: 3,007.14 FPS Extreme spread: 84.50 FPS Standard Deviation: 27.80 Olin/Winchester M855 Average velocity: 3,091.42 FPS Hi: 3,123.55 FPS Lo: 3,051.11 FPS Extreme spread: 72.44 FPS Standard Deviation: 24.91 The above data results from one ten shot string of each ammo type. While I was at it, I also shot ten additional rounds of each for accuracy. This was a rather informal test, but this is what I did. Two three shot groups and one four shot group at 100 yards. The Ingman gave me an average group size for the three groups of: 1.5" and the Olin/Winchester gave me an average group size for its three groups of: 1 5/16". The gun used was a Bushmaster A3 w/20" chrome lined, 1:9 twist. The optical unit was a Burris 1.5x6 x 40 scope which is mounted on an A.R.M.S.#5 multi base with Leupold medium rings. The Chronograph used was a Gamma Master Chrony. Readings were taken 15 feet from the muzzle. The conditions were: approx. 72 degrees, sunny, dry, very little wind. I only shot a total of twenty rounds of each ammo, but there were no malfunctions nor problems of any kind. Based upon the above results I would conclude that the two ammo types are very closely equivalent. Certainly the Ingman does not seem to be related to the NATO stuff that has been loaded down in order to work in the SA-80 Bullpup. POODLESHOOTER-IN-AZ: After buying 2000 rounds of Oly SS109 and having nothing but problems, I only bought 200 rounds of IGMAN SS109 to try out. It ran fine in my cherry Colt preban carbine, no problems at all. Sajer: After using up most of my South African surplus and not really getting the results I wanted with the PMP I decided to try the Igman. I picked up a case of the black tip ss109 on sale at AIM for $159 per k. In two previous trips to the range I was getting decent 2 to 3" groups out of my post ban colt carbine. This week I went to the range with the Igman ammo for some informal plinking. After about 100 rds, with breaks in between for cease fires, I experienced a ruptured primer. It was the first round out of a new mag and it blew all kinds of smoke out. I then noticed the case did not eject and it had blown out the bottom of my mag. I then manulay ejected the case with no problems and noticed the blown primer. The case was intact other than the primer and the previous rounds did not show any indications of a similar problem. After some advice from others I will check firing pin for issues to see if this might have influenced the round. The rifle itself was not damaged and had only 5k rounds put through to this point. After my inspections I will determine whether to continue to use this ammo and consider this a one time fluke. mlm1219: I have fired close to 1500 rounds of this ammo and have not had one malfunction. My only complaint is next to Lake City it "seems" not to be loaded as hot. This is only going by the recoil felt. JoeInCT: SS109. About 100 rds out of a 500 rd case so far thru a DPMS Classic A2 1x9 at 200 yds. No issues, good accuracy. My DPMS seems to do very well with 62gr, so I hope to try more soon so I can get a good comparison to Win 62, my favorite target ammo. Toratsugu: So far my M4gry LEGP and my 20" 1 in 7 kit rifle (M&A parts) love the 62gr hotshot ammo. I have had no problems whatsoever. Accuracy is good and can be better (operator needs to shoot more) I will pick up more at the next show. Sajer: I will add my continued bad experiences with this ammo. After my initial bad luck with this ammo, as was recorded earlier, I decided to try it again in two different rifles other than the Colt. First up was a J&T 20" standard kit on a Bushy recvr. 1 st round out blew a primer and locked the rifle up. Cleared rifle, with some difficulty, and inspected for damage. No damage found so I went back and fired off some PMP and some Winy. No problems with these so I try another new mag. Second round out bam, blown primer again. Set rifle down and clear and try it on a Bushy carbine. Bam 1st round out blows a primer and locks it up. |

I shot 300 rnds of M855 thru my Busmaster M4 with out any issues. The lot was from 2004. Accuracy was good not better than LC m855 or Remington UMC. I recomend it.

No chrono data yet? dam!
I got this stuff from Ammoman about 3 weeks ago. Comes nicely packed and the ammo looks just as good as the ones on ammoman's website. Anyways, I shot 100 rounds of this recently. Went bang everytime and I was able to get consistent 1.5" groups with my XCR/16inch/ACOG_TA11/1_9_Twist_chrome_line_barrel set up. And 2" groups with my Bushmaster/14.5inch/Aimpoint set up. Much more accurate than M193 Guat. |

Any news about the Igman M193?
What little I was able to shoot ('til the supply disappeared) was as good as Prvi in my guns. |
I shoot both the Igman M855 and the HotShot SS 109 and I perfer the HotShot because it performs like the Lake City, the Igman shoots okay but the problem that I have is it will not fully function throught my Bushmaster A4 ( 20 inch 1/7 barrel), it seems like it short strokes, after every shot you have to charge the weapon and it will not keep the bolt open after the last round, and I have used different Mags, so I know it is the ammo, but with the HotShot two thumbs up on that ammo.

I have tried to reload the Igman brass, the flash hole is to small, it pulls the deprime pin out of my die, to me the only two things to do is shoot it and throw the brass away or pull the bullet and load up good round, I also wieghed the powder charge and it came out to 22.8 grains of whatever they use.
I have shot about 800 rounds of Igman M193.
It's very pretty brass, and has obvious annealing. No chronograph data, but shooting a magazine mixed with XM-193 and Igman M193 I was unable to tell a difference. I had no failures with this ammunition. I shot it from a RRA midlength carbine with H Buffer. Pulling the bullet, the bullet was sealed, and the propellant was ball powder. My only complaint is that the primers are sealed with a red wax like substance, which gets onto the bolt face. I would buy more if it was decently priced. THE BRASS CANNOT BE RELOADED. The flash hole is smaller than normal. I broke two decapping pins trying to reload this brass. It shoots fine, but i will not buy it again. My brass was marker "1k 07 5.56 x 45" |
I also noticed that the brass (with the green primer sealant) would not fit well into my shell holder.n I had to pretty much force it in, which, in turn, made me not reload it. |

Bushmaster Dissipator (bone stock except for a Bravo Co f/a BCG)- Fired 60 rds PMC 55 gr first, and all fed and functioned perfectly. Loaded up the same 30 rd mag with Igman M855 lot # 10 IK 04, all brass headstamped 03. Out of the 30 rounds all but 2 short stroked, requiring manual charging to chamber another round. Single loaded the same mag 3x and the bolt wouldn't travel far enough to lock open. Several of the short strokes involved a partial feed with the bolt jammed into the cartridge case about midway down the case causing a complete stoppage. |
I get the feeling that they are having trouble with the older m855. I wonder about the m193? |
I shot approx. 100 rounds of the IK headstamped M855 labeled ammunition through two rifles (200 rounds total) with severe short stroking and massive crud buildup in the receiver. Rifle one was a 20" factory bushmaster upper on an Oly lower with Bushmaster internals. The other was a 14.5" w/ permanent flashider attached by CMMG on a Bushmaster lower with Bushmaster internals. Both rifles were reduced to single shot status with 30 rounds; full cleaning of the receiver and carrier group only resulted on 2-3 rounds being fired in semi before return to manual operation. Verified ammo related problem by firing 30 rounds of 50 grn Federal with no problems out of the 20" rifle, and 8 rounds of steel cased Wolf with only one FTE with the carbine. Lubrication used was Break Free CLP.

Previously last Sunday March 8th "Just back from the local fun show. The Romanian ss109(no green tip) Head stamp reads: SADU 08 5.56. Bullet has red sealant on neck and all over on the prime. Reminds me of S&B 9mm with all the sealant. Hotshot is $12/box and $450/880rd tin can out the door. I got a 20rd sampler from him and will report back the findings."
Loaded 10rds of the new 2008 Hotshot 5.56x45 SS109 62gr steel tip Romanian(no green tip) Head stamp reads: SADU 08 5.56. Used 20rd PMAG. The other 10rds was Winchester m855 62gr penetrator Q3269. Mag was mixed with both rds in mag. 1 Hotshot followed by 1 Winchester. Note I tested just for feel and functionality only(No chrono, no targets). Used 16" M4 1-9" chrome moly DPMS. Once firing began, I could not tell the difference between the two. All rounds fed, cycled and ejected fine. There is no mistake. More test are in order but in the mean time this stuff seems to be SHTF worthy except for the berdan primed and $0.56/rd price tag. Heck Winchester m855 is going for $0.85 - $1/rd currently. |

This stuff is available in my town for $0.50/round, is it worth it for plinking ammo at that price? I heard Hot Shot uses ball powder, any truth to that?

I've put about 200 rounds of green tip Igman through my Colt H-Bar. The only other ammo I've used is Lake City M855. The accuracy isn't quite as good, but there was not a single hiccup of any kind. I've converted the rifle to a 16" dissy, so that says a lot as this ammo is often said to be a little underpowered. At 100 yards I was routinely about 3/4 MOA with the LC stuff, but the best I could do was about 1-1/2" groups with this stuff. I noticed that the green coating appeared to be dipped, with some bullets having thick globs of it hanging off the bullet tips. As a fairly non-scientific experiment I scraped off the coating and polished the tips of a few of the uglier rounds and these did a little better shooting around 1-1/4" groups.
Overall, pretty good stuff for the price and worked flawlessly in a rifle length gas system 16"-er. I just wish I could find more. |
The green tip Igman I used was loaded with extruded powder and burned cleaner than ball powder. The brass appears to be sofer than LC 855 or Federal xm193.

I have some of the HotShot SS109 that AIM and many others are selling in the 800rd tins. Just some observations so far without having shot it:
1) Neck is sealed with red sealant. 2) Primer is sealed with red sealant. 3) Headstamp (unintelligible character like an "8")ADU 4) Made in Romania 5) Sectioned a bullet, jacket is steel and appears thick to my eyes. I would have my doubts about it fragmenting. Then again, if you want fragmenting ammo, SS109 isn't a good choice to begin with. 6) The penetrator is about the same dimensions as my M855 penetrators. Slightly darker though and rough on the flat tip with a texture similar to cast iron. Smooth at the base and sides. It's magnetic, and about as hard as M855 penetrators using my locking pliers as makeshift Rockwell hardness tester 7) Ball powder 8) I wonder if commies ever had to open a spam can in a firefight. |

I used Igman SS109 purchased from Sportsmans Guide. I never had any problems with it. The powder seems to be a clean burning IMR type as it left less deposits than any other brand. Some of the brass may be slightly soft as I would sometimes find brass under the extractor, more so than other brands of ammo. The ammo came packed in ammo cans in bandolieres.

I picked up some HotShot .223 from Century Arms and shot about 200 rounds this weekend. Box says made in Korea and had a identical timestamp noting production date like PMC, so I'm guessing it's re-boxed PMC. All shot good, however it seemed to be dirtier than PMC.

I have some Privi M855 ammo and love it. I was wondering if the "hot shot" ammo has the same muzzle velocity as the LC or the Privi? |

Shot some of this ammo today, from a sealed span can I bought a few years ago. Boxes labeled hotshot.
about 50% of the rounds fired had the primers pop out. Not blow up... not rupture... just blow out into the action, magazine, ect. When the primers didn't jam the action in my new colt 6720... it fired "fine" for offhand accuracy.... but it was extremely troubling to see brass cases minus primer landing on the ground. Just a big empty hole in the bottom of the casing. Horrible load... no way I'd trust it for SHTF, and I honestly dont think its safe for range use. |

Purchased 500 rounds HotShot 7.62X39 ammunition, Steel Casing, 123gn - fail to fire (dimpled primer) on 104 rounds (over 20%). 160 rounds Wolf (Steel Case/123gn) and 120 rounds Barnaul (Brown Bear/Steel Case/123gn) not an issue. <b>Will not purchase HotShot ammo again, and I would recommend that you don't either.</b> Two AR-15 style 7.62x39 (Spike's Lowers/Model 1 Uppers), six 20-round AR-Stoner magazines (used for ~1 year).

Tried again with an RCBS small base die and with a third (another Dillon) die before just throwing all of them out. Consider it "Fire and forget" -- I don't think it's worth recovering the brass other than to keep your range policed-up and tidy. |
