Hey gang - trying to get my arms around what the best purchase focus is at the Fun Shows. I currently have around 5K each of 5.56 and 7.62x51 (paltry numbers after viewing zipper's photo of what I estimate to be 50K rds of XM193 - bastard ), and a bare minimum of 25 mags per rifle (plus a good handful for each pistol).  I'm concerned over dwindling supplies of mags prior to a future AWB, though ammo seems to by flying off the shelves.

Thoughts?  Thanks!

Not too sure how to answer this.  But lately all the fun shows I've been to might as well been selling gold for the prices they were asking.

I've been buying all my mags on sale off of the net and pay less than $10 plus shipping.  Ammo has also been cheaper at my local shops and off the net.

If you find a great buy go for it.

I REALLY think that now will be considered the 'good old days' of magazine purchases in the future, so I say stock up as much as you can.   Good semi-autos, and good mags while GW is still in office.  (I know he isn't perfect, but he is better than some of the other options).  If we squeak thru the next election, well then I'll just have a real good start!!

I know it sounds stupid to say, "Buy both", but that is what I would recommend.

Decide what YOU consider the minimum amount of magazines and ammunition to have on hand would be.  Then inventory what you currently have.  Work on the area you are lowest in, then gradually increase both magazines and ammunition.

Right now, magazines (AR and Glock) are really cheep on the internet.  The cost of gas and admission to a show and "HOPE" I find a reassonable deal just about covers the cost of shipping when I order from the net.

Rifle ammunition is hard to find at a good price right now.  But if you need it and none is to be found, how much is it worth to you?

I am currently ok on ammunition.  I am replacing all of my older magazines for my Glock's and my AR15's with new ones.  I test fire the new ones, then put them away.  The magazines I had been using are now for range/training use.

"Ammo or mags?" is like "speed or accuracy?"

You need both!

So you already have 5K per caliber AND 25 mags PER rifle?  Did I read that correctly?

I would be pretty happy with that kind of stash and look into other stuff.  Unless all the other stuff is already taken care of......

And yes, Special-K - you read correctly on that.  I'm a little sick that way with the "never enough", though I probably have "plenty" by most people's standards.  One of the benchmarks I heard was 10K rounds per caliber (maybe even rifle), but it all depends on how much shooting you do.  After reading a couple other threads, stocking up on a set amount of good stuff and buying PD and other non-SHTF stuff for plinking & practice seems like the thing to do

Poll added...

I say get at least 10 30 rounders and then really stockpile the ammo.

Ammo now( espeically XM-193), mags later.

If I had to pick one or the other,  I would go with ammo.  A magazine never stopped anyone.  But the ammo in it did.  But both is the logical answer.

I figure right now we are living in the golden age of magazine afordability.  Seing as the high capacity magazine moratoriam is still a recent, unpleasant, memory I have to go with by mags, then ammo.

The original poster seems to have both well covered however.

I have 24 magazines (plus a C-Mag) for My Little Pony.

I now have problems feeding it; not nearly as much as I would like to.
So go get more ammo!
You never know when you might get a case of Q3131A or XM193 out there.

Maybe there should be a parallel poll in the "Magazine" forum.

The H&K SA 80 mags are real expensive, but the gov.test results state " that it  makes the M-16 weapons 30 to 50 % more reliable". Man if I had 5K mad money, I would DAMN SURE invest in H&K mags. I did, and won't ever look back.

One mag will feed thousands of rounds of ammo, it takes 30rds to fill a standard mag.  The ammo I bought 2-3 years ago is worth more now than it was then.  The mags I bought 2-3 years ago are worth quite a bit less.    Some ammo can be reloaded and used more than once,  most/all magazines can be used more than once.

I wouldn't buy much ammo now unless I needed it.  Get a few good mags now.  If ammo ever becomes "cheap" again........"buy it cheap and stack it deep" as they say.

If I had 5 mags and 5000rds........I would feel safe.

If I had 5000 mags and 5rds........I would feel stupid.

Now........which one do you think is more important!

It sounds like this guy already has the basics covered. But ammo is the safe way to further his stash. IMHO anything over 30 mags is just showing off anyway.
