(UPDATE)
I wanted to thank everyone who commented on the thread and give you an after action report. We were at the deer/hog lease today tried the XM193 in the Mini-14. It did just fine. Made very loud bangs and had a lot of flash. We were shooting at a can that was tied to a little pine tree. As you'll see from the picture, the tree did not like the ammo. We weren't trying to kill the tree; it just happened. This was after about 25 rounds. R.  ___________________ Original Post: I've got a friend who just acquired a mini-14 (boo, hiss) and 2k of boxed XM193. I've read the Oracle and my gut tells me he shouldn't shoot this ammo in the mini-14. What does the hive mind say (other than read the Oracle or do a better search for old posts). R. |

Tell him to sell the Mini-14 and get a rifle that's actually useful.
That's just my opinion. As for XM193 in it, I wouldn't. ETA: Just because I like to err on the side of "not blowing up" |

Yeah hot XM193 in the .223 chamber of a Mini 14 would not be my first thing to do. Right after shooting +P ammo out of a Rossi .38 special on my list of things not to do.

Not recommending it, but I have shot XM193 from a Mini without any bad consequences, probably 100 rounds or so, no problemo. On the other hand I have a bolt gun that is chambered for .223, and no way would I run military 5.56 in that one. I had read posts on the BBS forum of others using 5.56 in Minis, so I didn't feel I was out on a limb too far. Again, definitely not recommending anyone try this without talking to Ruger about it first, but for me, touching some off was not a suicide wish. By the way, the Mini was definitely accurate enough to be in the zone at 100 yards, fine by normal AK type standards, but not even close to a good AR.

So is the AC556 a 5.56 chamber?
I'm assuming so, I have a friend that shoots XM193 in his all the time. Did they ever make a semi with 5.56 chamber? |

Mine says .223 on it but I swear I read somewhere it was a 5.56 chamber. But not being marked as such I was always worried about it. |

This is a quote directly out of the owners manual for the mini 14
"The RUGER® MINI-14® RANCH RIFLES are chambered for the .223 Remington (5.56mm) cartridge. The Mini-14 Ranch Rifle is designed to use either standardized U.S. military, or factory loaded sporting .223 (5.56mm) cartridges manufactured in accordance with U.S. industry practice. Wouldn't make since to chamber it .223 when the flimsy barrel won't allow good accuracy.

I'll reiterate was has been said: The Mini-14 has a 5.56 chamber, despite the .223 markings (pretty well known in Ruger circles) The Mini-14 will shoot XM193 and XM855 just fine. Using a smaller gas port bushing will help control the cycle speed of the bolt, and hence brass ejection, if you have a Ranch Rifle. -Stooxie |

my old man has a mini14 and i'm pretty sure it says its safe to shoot 5.56mm in the manual somewhere.
i've shot 5.56 without damage so far. not any real long distances though, pretty weak twist isn't it? |

So, does Ruger offer a factor magazine of higher capacity than their 5 round standard? I was about to buy a mini 14 when a few black rifle people told me to strongly consider an AR. Damn glad I took their advice.

Second, third and checkmate on this question, as having been to the armorer's school and firearms instructor for LE, the Ruger Mini-14 is made and chambered for the 5.56 mm military loads, both 55 and 62 grain, and is issued to our agency. To date, surplus military ammo has not caused any malfunctions in any of our rifles. I could not tell you how many rounds, but figure beaucoup powder burned.
I have put around 3000 rounds through three Mini-14's, and no problem whatsoever. I am a Colt man, but respect the Mini and it's reliability, affordability and accuracy. IMHO |

P.S.- Since the ban lifted, you could get 20 rd factory Ruger mags at Cheaper than Dirt for around $24. Have to check and see if they still get them.

My mini thirty had problems with surplus ammo. Firing pin didn't have enough power to ignite the hard primers.

Are you a little slow? Most people of somewhat mild intelligence would have read the thread before making such an ill-informed post about ignorance. Your inability to focus long enough to read 30 posts shows your level of commitment to great thinking. If you can provide evidence that 5.56 NATO is not safe in a Mini-14, please let us know so that the rest of us can be safe. I am wrong, I guess im alitte slow in the head. Rugers web site says for the mini-14 that standard military 5.56mm ammo is acceptable for use in the above mention firearm. I appologize to your friend and to the author of this post. I used to own a old ruger mini-14 and was mis informed
