I think a .50 cal ammo can and a 5.56 ammo can(840 cartridges) are the same size.
I think that the ".30 caliber" ammo can is the smaller size you are wondering about. I'm not sure how big the .50 cal can is but I have a few 5.56 ammo cans and they are definetly bigger than the .30 caliber cans. Guaranteed..... |

No, the .50 cal can "looks" kinda the same size, but it IS a bit bigger than the standard ammo can for .223 cartridges. I know, cuz when I got my .50 cal cans I thought they had mistakenly sent me the .223 cans. I even called them and asked! But, yep, they were .50 cal cans, alright. |

Big - .50 cal Kinda big - .223 (840) Small - .30 What size is the 7.62? |

There are two (2) standard USGI cans for small arms ammunition:
"Fifty Cal" and "Thirty Cal." 7.62 comes in a "thirty cal" can. There are two "fifty cal" cans in a case of 1680 rounds of 5.56mm NATO. I've seen foreign "thirty cal" cans with an internal metal spacer on the side do 7.62mm fits in them better. Pretty sure these were Israeli. Enterior size is the same. I am curious...when you are in the field in the Army or Marines, etc.. how is ammo packed?
Does it come in magazines loaded in the cans or on strippers in banoliers? or?? |

belt fed is reay right out the can unless you wanted some exotic mixture. you have to load your own magaines! (stripper clips) when ever I load my 92F or 1911 magazines, I feel pity for the guys who had the Submachine guns! |

Great. Stripper clips in bandoliers? Is there some special way to place them in the can? I have a few .50 cal cans and one if for some longer term, SHTF storage.. Just want to do it right. |

Go to www.ammo-oracle.com for some pics and info on loading ammo cans with bandoleers. I think it said you can fit 4 seven pocket bandoleers in a .50 can and 2 in a .30 can.

5.56mm rifle ammo comes packed clipped in bandoleers, or boxed like commercial ammo.
840 rounds per "fifty cal" can could be in 7 four pocket bandoleers (M855) or 6 seven pocket (M193). Ammo to troops in a war zone should be clipped, but sometimes it arrives in boxes, or the rear troops grab the clipped and sent the boxed to the infantry. -- Chuck |
