It seems to be that, although another pic from the same event / same photographer I posted in the retro forum also has an identical error in its caption (5.62mm).

My guess is that the person who created the captions for those photos wasn't all that familiar with what was what, and got 5.56 and 7.62 mixed up in their notes and thus resulted in the creation of the 5.62 mm

FYI going forward as I post more of these pics: It's not uncommon to find the captions on these photos to be incorrect, at least in their reference to the featured weapon(s).  While I try to catch the errors and edit / correct them before posting, I miss some of the mistakes too.  Here is another example of an incorrect designation for the pictured rifle (Not an M16 but a commercial semi-auto A2 rifle):

Navy Reservist Construction Electrician 2nd Second Class Anthony Bennett, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One Eight (NMCB-18), dry fires his M-16 rifle.

Fort Lewis, Wash. (Apr. 08, 2006) Navy Reservist Construction Electrician 2nd Second Class Anthony Bennett, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One Eight (NMCB-18), dry fires his M-16 rifle prior to firing live rounds. Bennett was one of 26 students who took part in the small arms firing school sponsored by the Washington National Guard at Fort Lewis, Wash. U.S. Navy photo by Journalist 1st Class Dave Gordon File# 060408-N-2296G-004

Here's a more obvious example of an incorrect rifle designation in the caption:
