Constant mag dumps of steel cased Russian= About 6,000 Rounds
Constant mag dumps of brass cased decent ammo= 10,000+ Rounds. Less rigorous firing schedule with time allowed for sufficient cooling between mags= 15,000+ Rounds. Lucky Gunner Barrel Burnout Test. |

Just read about filthy14. Very interesting.
I am one of the anal persons who cleans his AR pretty much after every range trip. It's been my habit since I started shooting when I was about eight, and was taught to "clean your firearm" after you shoot it. Obviously not needed for an AR! |

Thanks for all of the information. I am going to try to break my clean every range trip habit.
I have about five hundred rounds through my m16 so far, mostly at a steel plate at 200 yards. That is enough challenge for me. For me the M16 is a joy to shoot. Fortunately, during cheap ammo times I bought several 1,000 round cases of 223/5.56 ammo, so I am sitting on a nice stash. Recently I have been increasing my Okay 20-round mags before they disappear. Thanks again for the replies! |

I know this would be an approximation. Thanks! Wait, what?! The calculation is based upon the dwell time a fired projectile resides in the barrel, screaming down the bore with the brakes on. Now imagine 10,000 5.56mm projectiles lined up end to end like links in a chain being yanked down a 20" barrel at 3200+ feet per second. It would be therefore be around five total seconds to move those rounds through the barrel at that speed and subsequently wear out the rifling. I didn't check the math on this claim but I thought it was a pretty funny way to imagine it. |

You aren’t setting any parameters to your question. What do you consider “working life” from a barrel is acceptable? You’re basically saying, “How many miles can I get out of a car engine before I need to have it rebuilt?” If you’re one of these goofs who plunks his butt behind a bench and thinks the universe revolves around .5 MOA groups not that many. If you’re a guy who only likes to shoot from the hip and spray away at nothing there’s quite a lotta “working life” from that barrel cuz’ those folks could care less about accuracy.

I had a Non-chrome lined DPMS 16” HBAR barrel on a prairie dog rifle.
It shot sub moa for about 2500-3000 rounds. Then it started dropping off to around 1.5” groups and I replaced it. I was happy with what I got out of it. Composition of the barrel makes difference. |

For a normal service rifle probably 10,000 rounds or so, before Joe is really bitching about accuracy. When I shot NRA/CMP Service Rifle with my M14 clone I'd get 4,500-6,000 rounds before uncalled flyers start. With my AR types I'd get 2,500-3,500 before flyers start. The barrels were still plenty serviceable for range practice or short courses. The throats were shot out for service rifle, but fine for playing at the range.
