I recently got a 601 grip and I noticed that it is different from another real 601 grip I have. This new one has checkering that is sunken into the grip far more than any other I've seen. Also the back of the grip is flatter and swivel boss is shaped differently too. Is this an earlier grip?

took a look at my box of grips and found i had both as well.  the recessed checkering one has a very pronounced lip and when you run your finger over it, you can definitely feel the recess.  not sure which came first though.  i did have a lot more non-recessed than recessed grips.

I'm thinking the recessed variant is earlier. The first style black skinny grip is the same pattern as the non-recessed 601 grip.

It may just me the mold. I wonder how many molds they had running to make the grips.
