Not sure if this belongs here or in the ammo section, since it's 6.8 related. Mods, feel free to move if needed.

Recently picked up a 6.8 upper for my AR, so I'm looking for ammo.

Found a local shop with a good stash of Hornady "Black" ammo, 110 grain V-Max bullet, and I'm going to grab some each time I'm in the area.

Barrel is a Noveske 10.5", I believe it is 1:12 twist.

Is there any ammo I should look for, or stay away from?

Thanks!

I like the Fusion 90gr loads.

I've had poor luck with the Black ammo. It's accurate as hell, But it loads poorly. I've yet to spend a lot of time analyzinge the reason, but most evidence points to the Polymer tip catching on the front of the magazine for the second or third round.

Verry accurate, but feeds poorly in my rifle.

I Haven't spent a lot of time investigating why, or if other ammo will run better. I never had problems before, but, I don't remember what I was using then. Probably solid tip bullets. (hard to find lately)

With what mags?

120gr SST gets my vote for general hunting with factory ammo.
More accurate in my guns vs Federal.
Can also find it in most stores locally.

I wanted to try some Barnes 95gr loads but they are extra spendy.

I've had great accuracy and terminal effects on mid-size game with the 110 VMAX. It feeds fine for me out of PRI mags.

Magazines are usually the number one cause of feeding malfunctions in 6.8/6.5/7.62x39 AR-15's.

I prefer light bullets in 6.8 and 6.5G AR's. If you aren't reloading at home your options are limited. Especially right now. I use 28.0 grains of H322 with Sierra 115 grain MatchKings for my accuracy load in 6.8, it's a known good load that was developed early in the history of this cartridge. Start lower, work up.

You can use the same powder charge with Sierra's 110 grain Pro-Hunter bullets for a general purpose load. 90 grain Speer hollow points for great accuracy and lower costs.

The only factory ammo to specifically avoid is Remington and SSA.

Remington is underpowered crap, and SSA was ruined by Nosler.

Remington is also over priced for what it is, and uses LRP.

SSA was the shit back in the day.

The most accurate round is the Hornady 110 BTHP
They had it in 200 round boxes and before that just 20 round boxes
It shoots 1/2-3/4” 5 shot groups for me from 3 different barrels I have had
I’ve killed pigs with it too
The Sellier and Bellot 110 FMJ is accurate for a FMJ load
The 115 HP from Privi is very accurate too close to the Hornady but it does not frag I do t believe as I shot a pig multiple times and it ran off
The Federal American Eagle FMJ I used to shoot was very accurate too
I have handloaded 110-100 grain Accubonds with H-322 and they are devastating on animals and shoot 1/2” groups
My 16” stainless barrel from the guy we are not supposed to talk about is amazing for what it cost

I've had fantastic results handloading that Hornady 110 BTHP, using PRI mags and a slightly longer OAL.

Cavity Back Bullets now has their 105 grain and 120 grain MKZ bullets available as loaded ammo in SPCII.
The only ammo currently made for the 6.8 SPC that's loaded to SPCII pressures.

I've checked their site from time to time and have never seen loaded/live ammo for sale. Heck, I just checked again after reading your post and I cannot find it.

I don't see an option for it or ever remember seeing an option for it.

Media is the last option.

So, when my phone's horizontal, which is about the only way I use it, their menu only scrolls down to cavity back media. BUT, when I hold the phone vertical, the menu continues to scroll down through more options....

Stopped at a different store and they had a stack of Hornady "Custom" for $40 a box. Didnt see if it was the 100 grain GMX or if it was the 120 grain SST.

On a side note, I read on the 6.8 forums that the 1:12 i have is pretty much the norm, and should do handle just about anything that fits in the mag (weight wise).

Lol, thank you.

Still rather sore about the menu scrolling down, but not all the way, unbeknownst to me. If it had just cut off, I would've reflexively turned the phone vertical, but it did allow you to scroll down while horizontal, so I never thought to.

You can get ammo much cheaper online.

Pretty sure 1:11 has been the norm for quite some time now, but 1:12 should be able to handle everything that's currently available for factory ammo.

The 6.8 started in its earliest variants as 1/9.5” and 1/10”
It then moved to 1/11” and really dialed in when it hit 1/11.25” from the awesome barrel maker we aren’t supposed to mention
Some stayed at 1/10 like LWRC but my 1/11.25” has been beyond lights out and is older 5R now they are 3R but I don’t know how you could make anything more accurate
I guess if you wanted to run really light bullets the 1/12 may be a variant I have not seen

Nothing wrong with the hornady.

I like the 90 gr federal xm68gd. We bought over 1k rnds a while back from PSA for 7.99/20.

I mostly hand load for mine though.

Barrett mags have been the best for me. Had issued with both PRI and ASC. Couldn't get them to feed right. ASC would jam with anything over 7 rounds in the mag.

Just picked up a few more boxes of the 110 grain "Black" ammo.

Seems to be the most common in my area in the brick and mortar stores.

Unfortunately, my state has magazine restrictions, so im stuck with 10 rounders. Picked up some PRIs during the 4th of July sale. Not the cheapest mags, but seem to have the best track record.

Same here for shooting mostly hogs.   I don’t like the 110 much. I also have a lot of the Jordanian over run 90gr and it does well too.  Wish I had bought more of each.   Sucks to not handload these days.

Or the XM68GD from Federal too

Adding that I'd wish the Anoka MN plant would do another run for the Jordanians and Saudis. We need some more contract over runs PSA

Agree.  Pretty accurate stuff for factory ammo, particularly factory ammo sold at non-match prices.

The 110 PTS special bullet absolutely kills deer.  I wish the PTS 110 gr bullet was available as a separate reloading component.
