Maybe the 6 Hagar should be on the list?
I'm not playing with match rifles, but many of the club guys run both Service Rifle as well as Match guns. White Oak has been doing uppers in this cartridge for the competition guys. |

The 6.8 can do it & they have some good bullets. But, the 6.5G/.264 LBC is better overall at long range w/o going wildcat. Then the 6 wildcats.

I sold an IOR scope to a vet that hunts deer in bean fields at those distances.
He uses an appropriate caliber IMO, IE 7mm RM. |

A 105 lapua has a BC of .530 and can reach velocities of 2800 where a 6.5 bullet with a .530 BC may only hit 2600 out of the same length barrel. A 243LBC/6mmAR or 6BR will allow shooting the 105 at mag length. The 6mm bullet range are good for anything from prairie dogs to deer and hogs. |

6.5BRX if you don't mind a wildcat.

Are you looking for the best long range cartridge, period, or the best long range cartridge off the shelf that doesn't require reloading and has reasonable cost, i.e., $1-ish per round?
For the latter, 6.5 Grendel. It'll push a 123 grn bullet with a relatively impressive BC to decent velocity. It's not a 1000 yd laser, but for a simple upper change and new mags, it'll shoot accurately and reasonably flat to several hundred yards. I believe there are .223 loads that perform similarly elevation-wise, but the high BC of the 6.5 pills better the .223 in wind drift. For the former, the posters above have mentioned several great alternatives. |

The anser to your question depends on what you going to do with your rifle. if paper and steel plates are the order of the day, save yourself some money and go with 223. If you have the skill a 75 grain match bullet will carry the mail to the 600 yard line.
If you are going to hunt with this rifle, then we are looking at a different situation. inside 300 yards a 6.8 SPC will kill anything with horns and hair. out to 300 yards the 6.8 hits like the hand of God. the catch is while it won't drop out of the sky past 300 yards the juice does drop off really fast. If you want to hunt inside 300 yards and shoot targets at 900+ with the same cartridge, then a 6.5 grendel may be your go to cartridge. Me personally, I grab my .308 when target shooting past 600 yards or hunting past 300. Out to 600 my 223 with a 75 grain BTHP is plenty good enough to hit the 600 yard 12 inch plates at my home range. I am however seriously considering a 6.8 upper for hunting inside 300 yards. |

I think everyone covered it well here.
If you don't reload: 6.5 Grendel If you do reload, and want to use one that requires you to size up or down on the necks: 6mm wildcats for a production mag-fed option (6mm AR, 6mm Hagar, .243 LBC, etc.) 6.5 BR for a unique .473" case head option, with greater powder capacity I like the Grendel, and even though I went into with the full intention of only hand-loading, I have leaned heavily to shooting any of the 23+ different factory loads available for it now, especially the Hornady 123gr AMAX. |

I'd put a Sierra .224 80gr and my wind call up against any of the above and have and out shot them. Its all about the nut behind the trigger ammo cannot correct weak marksmanship foo.

But you're single-loading with that pill, probably on a led sled, unless you cut the magazine face wall, and the .224 AR will beat the case capacity of the .223 for that application as well, with that same 80gr SMK, or a 90gr Berger, or a 75gr AMAX. Agreed about the capabilities of the shooter. |
