I'm eyeing either:

Stag-15L Model 3HL Pre-Ban for $500

Quick specs:

Caliber....5.56 Nato Chamber
Upper......Forged and Mil Spec.
Sights..... None
Barrel.....16" Chrome Lined 1/9 Twist
Break......A2 Flash Hider

OR

Teknic's STAG LIMITED 14.5  LEFTY UPPER w/Perm YHM-28A Phantom for $600

MPI Tested 14.5" 4150 Chrome Lined Barrel 1:7 Twist
Phantom Flash Suppressor Pinned (Permanently Attached)
M4 Feedramps
Chrome Lined Bolt Carrier w/
MPI Tested Bolt

Which one would you choose for range fun and home defence and why?

A concern of mine is the FH on Teknic's is perm attatched which limits my choice of hand guards (I wanted to go FF) and front sights.

An input would be appriciated.

i prefer 1x7 twist for the shooting i do but dont care much for permanently attatched or 14.5"

I would go with your second choice.

Teknic's STAG LIMITED 14.5 LEFTY UPPER w/Perm YHM-28A Phantom for $600

MPI Tested 14.5" 4150 Chrome Lined Barrel 1:7 Twist
Phantom Flash Suppressor Pinned (Permanently Attached)
M4 Feedramps
Chrome Lined Bolt Carrier w/
MPI Tested Bolt

I think for the money you would get a better upper.

I don't like permanently attached things on a modular system.

I am not sure about the utility of M4 feedramps.

The Stag 3HL is really nice.

I'm sure both would serve you well, but I like the longer barrel and removeable FH.

Personally, I'd go with the 14.5" from Teknic.  It depends on what you want to do with it.  For an inside the house (CQB) carbine, I do notice the difference between 14.5" and 16" barrel.  There are some FF rail systems that will go on with permanent FS.  I believe the Vltor CAS-V will go on 14.5 w/ permanent FS.

Thanks for the replies.

$100 is a nice savings too.

If I have to choose myself for mostly plinking and range use I'll go for the 16" 1/9 upper.

For a mostly tactical or self defense use I'll go for the 14.5" 1/7 upper and I'll install either a Samson, Troy or Midwest Ind. two piece FF rails.

To install the two piece FF rails just cut and remove the delta ring and spring and install the handguard on the barrel nut without removing the FSB and FS.

My use would be home defence and plinking.

The AR wouldn't be the only firearm available for HD though. I'll be shopping for a .40 Sig 239 or 229 soon.
