If I were building an ultimate varminter and nothing is more important that accuracy with .223 ammo, who makes the best AR barrels out there. Not best bang for the buck. Who makes the best AR barrels?
Secondly, with a piece like that is it advisable to have an AR 'expert' do the installation? Thanks for any advice Mark

There's a lot of great barrel makers to choose from, Im not the most informed as to all of them but I can tell you I have read up on it because I wanted to get a premium barrel for a SPR I built. After looking at most of the choices, I wound up with a Kreiger barrel chambered by Compass Lake. I got it from Wes at MSTN. It is an amazing shooter.

I stongly suggest the Bushmaster Varminter barrel. I have one and it shoots 1/4 MOA all day. In my mind it is THE BEST !
I would have an "expert" install the barrel. Hope this helps. |

A QUARTER MOA AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO CLEAN IT?!? I WANT THE SAINT'S BARREL!
RESEARCH INTO WHO IS HOLDING WHAT RECORD WITH WHAT MAKE BARREL WOULD STRONGLY INDICATE LILJA. WE JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE FIVE STAINLESS 1X8" LILJA BLANKS, THE SAME AS USED BY DEVGROUP FOR THEIR RECCE/RECON CARBINES (WHY DO YOU THINK THEY USED LILJA FOR THEIR LAST RUN?) SITTING DOWN AT COMPASS LAKE, WAITING FOR A GOOD HOME. WE CAN MAKE THEM INTO WHATEVER YOU WANT UNDER 25". COMPASS LAKE ALSO MAKES GREAT BARRELS FOR US FROM KRIEGER AND DOUGLAS BLANKS. THE DOUGLAS TENDS TO SHOOT BETTER SOONER, WITH THE KRIEGERS ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING WELL LONGER. I FEEL THAT DOUGLAS IS THE MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK. SO DID CRANE, APPARENTLY, WHEN THEY SPEC'D DOUGLAS FOR THE SPR. TARAN BUTLER RECENTLY WON THE 2004 USPCA 3-GUN LIMITED TITLE USING ONE OF OUR UPPERS (RATHER LIKE AN SPR ON A DIET) WITH A DOUGLAS BARREL. WE'RE BUILDING AN ULTIMATE M4-BASED SNIPER RIG FOR A CONTRACT SHOOTER RIGHT NOW: 20" VARMIT CONTOUR FLUTED STAINLESS KRIEGER 1X7"; NIGHTFORCE 3.5-15X50 NXS, ETC. EVEN THOUGH THE BARREL IS A MASSIVE 1.00" UNDER THE HANDGUARDS AND 0.820" FORWARD, IT STILL ONLY WEIGHS 50.4 OUNCES. A SERVICE RIFLE MATCH BARREL WEIGHS 54 OUNCES, TYPICALLY. JEFF COOPER ONCE MADE ONE OF HIS CLEVER ANALOGIES BETWEEN SUB-MOA RIFLES AND 150 MPH AUTOS. BOTH ARE APPEALING, BUT IT IS HARD TO APPLY THEIR POTENTIAL UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. I am very impressed with my SPR barrel from White Oak Armament. I believe they are Wilson blanks. I got it from JTAC.

Another +1 for WOA/Wilson barrel.
Also have a very good Colt barrel on a 6724 (24" Stainless) |

I have always thought very highly of Krieger barrels, and still do, but this year at the National Matches at Camp Perry I heard quite a bit about Benjamin barrels and folks swearing that they’re better than Krieger. I might have to try one out, the guy is just up the road from me in Portland.

Anyone have more info on the Benjamin barrels? A guy was talking to me about these barrels and claiming the same thing - I thought he was full of it, but maybe this is something to look into for my SPR build, especially since they are supposedly in my neck of the woods!
