Need to build up a CAR length upper.

Need to replace a #45M so there's no Delta ring assembly, and the upper wears a Fatboy, the older style, so taking down the barrel requires removal of the front sight assembly on this ne, and sliding the Fatboy fwd. then out.  If you've installed an early fatboy you know the PITA I'm talking about.
So It'd be nice to replace the #45M w/ a mil model.

So...
#50M or the #58MOD
advantage I see of the 50 over the 58 is wt. any other thoughts?

And for all of you KAC guys out there...

"Neither get a RAS/RIS"
"I vote KAC"
"KAC"
etc. etc.
There I got it out of the way for you.

#58MOD. Offers the most bang for the buck.

As a SIR 50 owner I would go with the 58 Mod if I were starting a new build.

Those 58Mod's look sweet!  What's the best
way to remove the handguard cap?  Is it possible to remove it without having to remove the front sight base?

Jimbo, thanks for your 2.

I've built a #58MOD, you can Dremel all the way down to right next to the cap.  I like leaving myself room to screw up, so I didn't go down to the barrel.  I went close then used a good solid set of tin snips and just cut through to the barrel.

It's not bad.  Once your on it cutting, you'll see what I'm saying, I'm not the most "delicate" or "arts and craftsy" kind of guy, I pulled it off.

PS- If your looking to cut loose that #50, and its in good shape I've got a back burner project that needs a civvy. modeled SIR.  So don't be shy reach out.  Thanks, S2

#58MOD, it's better to have the have the extra real estate just in case you need it.

My vote would be 58-mod also unless you have PEQ2.

Considered that too, but figured I'd go w/ the Vital 2, should I need an IR designator.

Anyone know if the #46 comes in an "M" version?
Will the PEQ2 rail, on the #46/45 mount to the Vital2 instead of the ARMS Throw Lever on the Vital2, and if I mounted an optic, Aimpoint M2 etc, above the receiver rail on a SIR would the Vital sit low enough on a Bilevel to allow the Sights to clear it?
Also would the PEQ2 rail of a #45/46 work w/ a #50/58MOD etc.?  #s 50 and 58 have rails that will level the SIR, to the top rail, but will a #46/45 flipped mate w/ the bi-Levels?

Thanks, S2

I have the #50, but the 58 mod takes the PEQ2 on top front bi-level or at either side just like my #50, but the 58 MOD gives more hand room when mounted on the side than the #50.
The vital will work best on a #50 or 58 bi level, or 58MOD, as you get a good sight plane over it from what I tried with irons and monocular.
Good shootin, Jack

If you're not sweating the delta ring being removed, go with the #58mod. It has everything all the other SIRs have and a little more.

Thanks for chiming in NewARGuy, the new SIR is replacing a #45, so the delta assy. being off is locking me into an "M" version, but I wasn't sure if:
1) the #46 came in an "M" version, for a pretty much straight swap
2) or I should go w/the #50, or 58MOD, which
would require me to dremel off the front
   handguard cap.

If you have no problems with snipping the handgaurd cap off, the only reason to go with a #50 over a #58mod in my opinion is to save $30.

I've built rifles with every SIR system there is by now (except the #58 midlength!) and my favorite gun, with all my favorite gear, as you know, has a #58mod.

The 58mod is the bomb of all SIRs.
