I'm trying to decide between a 14.5 and 18in barrel for a DMR/SPR type rifle. Rifle will wear a vortex viper 2.5-10 and with a Geissele SSA-E trigger and will be shot out to 300yds and want something that will be very accurate. What do you guys think? 16in is not an option.

Either are capable of good work up to 300 yards.  The 18-inch is simply capable of shooting further.

You still to have to do your job with both, all normal disclaimers apply.

I personally like having the shortest possible rifle that can handle the job. A good 14.5 should have no problem out to 300, so that is what I would go with.

I went with 18" based on the optic that you are putting on it.  The 18" will give you a slight bit more range.

The higher muzzle velocity of the 18 will reduce the time gravity and wind have to move the bullet in flight, but the difference will be less than a couple inches in hold over or correction at 300 yards than you're going to have to account for anyways. If you plan to go out farther at all, the difference will grow. Your max range will increase a bit as well, but 14.5 is still well past 300. It won't make your rifle more precise (assuming two fair barrels of equal quality), but it might help you to be more accurate by reducing the amount corrections needed and minimizing errors.

If you plan on humping this rifle for any kind of real distance and 300 yards is the typical distance you will be going out, the 14.5 will do the job just fine as long as you do yours behind the trigger and be hella lighter. But, you're either going to have to SBR or pin your muzzle device, the latter I'd be a little leery of doing on a precision rig just because an over or under torque FH can be adjusted, but it isn't a huge deal if it's done correctly.

For a DMR/SPR type of AR, you want an 18" barrel.

IMO, SPR and SBR are mutually exclusive. But that's just my opinion.

14.5" will be perfectly fine out to 300, but if you plan on going further then I would opt for a longer barrel. Curious why you can't go with a 16" though since it's pretty much perfect for that role.

Will 300 yards be the average or max distance? I've been running 14.5's for the past two years exclusively and the furthest I've personally shot is out to 450yds and it's pretty capable at that distance. If your max range will be 300 yards, I'd say go with the 14.5.

If you plan on getting out to 500-600, the 18" might be a better option.

My 14.5 hog gun was plenty for me right out to around 400 yds. Last deer season took a spike @ 325 yards with it.

That being said, I feel like an 18 would work better as an all around DMR rifle, the size difference doesn't bother me all that much and the extra barrel length will help out at longer ranges. Getting in and out of vehicles, carrying it long distances, etc., would point to a shorter bbl. YMMV

300yds is the furtest range I have access to. I should also add that this rifle will be shot suppressed 95% of the time.

14.5" for sure in that case.

For sure.

14.5" is more than enough for even well beyond 300 yards.

And with a can, it's a no brainer.

A member here who only has access to M193 ammo may eventually chime in about an extra 50 yards of fragmentation, but the rest of us here have access to more than just M193.

Didn't see that 300yd req when I voted. If you were in the right mindset, you'd have said "300yd and beyond".

Otherwise, for out to 300yd, a standard carbine would suit you better.

I shoot my BCM 14.5" lightweight out to 400 yards on 8" steel targets with a 1.25-4x scope.  No problem at all.

14.5 or 18 it all depends on the pink squishy thing between the trigger and the ground.

You can ring steel easy with either with the right ammo.

What do you guys think of a BCM ELW 14.5in barrel with 13in KMR rail to cut down on weight for this setup? Will it be plenty accurate enough with slow fire and a suppressor or should I go with a heavier contour barrel?

As soon as my parts get back from Cerekoting I will be building this upper...the waiting is the hardest part

Waiting is always the worse part.....

I went with a 18"

Just my thoughts, if you're wanting to call it your SPR/DMR I'd go with an 18" barrel.

If you're wanting the 14.5" barrel, you'd be joining the mini-recce club.

I have a 1-4x optic on an 18" gamer gun, a 1-4x on my 14.7" mini-recce, and am wanting to build an 18" SPR with that 2.5-10x or other mid- to high-powered scope.

This exactly. SPRs/DMRs will have 18" - 20" barrels depending on the military unit's specifications. A 14.5" barreled AR like what the OP is talking about is just a mini-Recce type, not a SPR/DMR.
