it may have been coined by bushy

but I think of a true one as a 20 inch rifle, cut down to fsb still at 12 rifle gas port position

like the ones in nam

This is the correct answer.

FSB w/ gas block at mid-length it a "mock dissipator", but has been called dissipator by everyone.

That's because everyone is smart and realized rifle-length gas was a bad idea. Still, the OG original was a cut-down rifle.

To call anything "Mock" or "True" at this point is an exercise in silliness.

The Colt 605 concept was a cut-down 20" barrel with a full-length gas system from 1965.  Brownells now makes new clones of them.

A Bushmaster Dissipator was a 16" barrel carbine with a carbine length gas block under the handguards.  It was a term used in their catalog.  I owned a pre-ban factory upper in 99.

The only "Dissipators" I know Colt made were carbine-length gas systems for the CHP in 2002.

It's now just a term.

Just like kleenex, or xerox.

I like my Spike's Tactical upper with midlength gas system.  It's just as much a Dissipator as my first Bushmaster.

Best,
JBR

My version of a "Product Improvement Program" Model 605.

No, it's not a "true" 605 in that it doesn't have a rifle length gas system.

It does have what I thought a modernized 605 would have, including a KAC 3-prong suppressor mount instead of an original 3-prong FH on a 15" bbl, KAC rail, A1 removable carry handle w/true slickside upper, upgraded A1-style PG and upgraded A1 stock w/integral QD socket.

Color is Cerakote Federal Standard Field Drab. I liked the crossed cannons and "U.S. Rifle"-marked LRB lower.

It's really a handy little rifle.

Thank you. The worst part about the term "Mock Dissipator" was that the people who use it tend to have their definition backwards.

Thanks. Actually it's a Cav Arms stock with a GI buttplate assembly. I have some GI A1 stocks, but I wanted the updated materials.

It really should have a CS stock, but there's no way I'd pay the going rate then drill it for a QD socket.

I see people mentioned Faxon as having the upper/barrel available at one time. Anyone else with a good rep to watch?

If in a few months I can't make any progress I'll look into "frankenstein" working a barrel up. Seeing as its for someone else I wouldn't want to chance the reliability potentially being an issue with a rifle length system.

Some of these are pictured somewhere earlier in the thread I'm pretty sure. The bottom one if obviously a work in progress. As you can see, I'm pretty much a KISS/keep it stock kinda guy. No rattle canning, no optics (the whole point of a dissy for me is the longer sight radius), etc. I did find some nice rifle length drop in handguards that I really like, but of course they're not available anymore. That style of handguard is becoming harder and harder to find it seems. I may have to free float one if I make more.

I'm in the process of piecing together a dissipator-ish rifle, however, I'm stuck. If possible, I need a measurement for the distance between the forward face of the upper receiver and the rear face of the front sight gas block. Or, the distance from the front rim of the barrel extension to the machined lip the handguard cap touches. I've found stated measurements 12.0, 12.7 and 12.75, but without an actual rifle upper to measure, I'm reluctant to pin anything. Thanks.

So im looking at putting a dissy together.  I have a matching Windham Bushmaster reciever set and a Spikes chf 18" govt profile barrel.  Would cutting this to 16" and adding taper pin cuts for an A2 post be acceptable?

Thanks.

Love the look and I found some at Brownells (based on the BRN-10 note below), but, alas, they only work with round handguard caps. Pretty sure all my Dissy's have triangles.

These are the Nodak HGs. I see they have the heat shields now. But I will say, after a CMP match, I never have noticed them getting warm. I can't speak for doing a full-auto mag dump or anything. :) They have held up well the last bunch of years. I just ordered a set of the mid-length Proto HGs to make a faux mid prototype.

Saw SinistralRifleman's AWB retrospective and it made me weirdly nostalgic for the first AR I ever built when I was living behind enemy lines. So I rebuilt a close approximation of it.

SOLGW East India match upper made in to faux dissy with an Aero M16A4 clone lower. Fun fact, this lower has the Aero "A" on the right side of the receiver that all the cloners got butthurt over, which makes this lower older than the blem A4 lower I bought from Aero back in 2016. I also still have the FailZero NiB BCG and Radion Raptor LT I bought so many years ago, although the BCG now sits in the "very last resort" parts bin (the gas key isn't even staked). Holosun is a 403R as opposed to the 403B I had, but I like the radial wheel better than the push button set up.

Got a barrel back today that I wanted in Dissy configuration.  This is a Spikes CHF 18" rifle length gas.  I had John of Retro Arms Works chop, crown, drilled the pins for the FSB, opened the gas port and pin/weld the MD.  Did a stellar job.  I got his name off of the forum here in a thread from years ago.  He was great to work with and called me back after my initial email to him and talked me into what should be done to make a barrel like this work.  He had it back in the mail in 2 days from when he received it.

Ill post picks of the completed rifle when done, but right now I can't recall if I have a gas tube roll pin (dang it) to finish the job.
