I see this going nowhere.
The arguments seem to go on and on with little solidarity as far as weight reduction, increased effective cooling, or improved rigidity. I am currently considering having a Noveske SPR barrel done...but for me it'd be purely cosmetic. If it's your thing..run with it. If not..I don't think your rifle will peform any worse without. Just my two pennies. -D2V |

Final consensus....
Really, I thought everyone forgot about it. Hey, if you like it.... great. It just isn't for me. If there were a proven absolute advantage to dimpling, I might try one. Until then, I'll pass. |

Does it do anything beneficial? Not sure. It did lighten it up some but I don't know if there are any other benefits. I'll admit I did it mainly for aesthetic reasons.

There should be a weight savings and better cooling without a significant effect on accuracy. I LIKE the look and that one reason also. In my case I was able to get a accurate 16" SS barrel that came in at 1 lb 10.8 oz, which was lighter than my 10.5" SBR barrel. Dimpling service is not that much more than re-contour and other fluting services.

It seems to me that dimpled barrels perform like other barrel fluting. They lighten the barrel, provide more surface area for increased cooling(how much? Don't know.), and are a personal preference. Also, like fluting a barrel, they do not bend the laws of physics and strengthen the barrel or make it more rigid. I think it should be in the same category as every other barrel fluting, its just a different style.
The only thing I can see that might be different about them; you might have a more consistent and longer flight path when trying to achieve a "battle worn" look, similar to how golf balls work, just make sure you get some spin on it.

Love the dimpled barrels! Keep the pics coming, there should be a tacked photo thread for these.
I've been thinking about having my AR10T carbine SS barrel dimpled. It's a little heavy for what I'm using it for. I think this mod is very sexy, but it's a matter of personal preference just like many other things. ARKAR |

My opinion only, but that is the godawfulest, ugliest thing I've ever seen done to an AR. Lots of little dirt traps, too. Not for me.

Final consensus: Almost as aerodynamic as a Titleist
But really, I dont think it looks too bad and DOES provide some useful benefits. I think it looks better than fluting anyways, was never a fan of fluting for some reason. |

Well, fluting makes a barrel stiffer than a non-fluted barrel of the same weight per inch, and also speeds cooling. No laws of physics are broken or even bent. I don't know about dimples, haven't thought much about it, but since the dimples also increase surface area, cooling should also get a boost. A dimpled barrel, like a fluted one, will naturally be lighter than the same barrel not modified. |

Has anyone ever seen interrupted fluting? That might be a cool treatment. The flutes would be maybe 2" long with maybe 1/4" between them, with the adjacent flute being offset so the interruptions are staggered.

I had Marvin do my Noveske 10.5..
It came out perfect.. Looks great but thats about it.. I didnt see any accuracy difference, not that I exected any. It lost like 2 oz's which isnt enough to notice. I really dont ahve any way to tell if it dissipates hear any better. But I hope it does cause I run it supressed most of the time.. I say go for it. Just dont expect a world of difference except for the look. |

I'm no expert like this guy but when I got mine back I was thrilled with the way the new barrel balanced, much better than before. It also cools down faster than any other barrel I have ever shot. I think the boolits probably go faster too, but I haven't checked it. |

If I'm not mistaken, the dimple pattern that ADCO does is not the same as the Knights. It's different enough in my book to matter.. if I were to get it done. The ADCO pattern just doesn't look as cool as the Knights... I think.

Let's see the club or iron you use to hit that "bad boy".
Fluting or dimpling a rifled barrel after the fact is not a good idea. You will lose accuracy. How much is anyone's guess. |
