This may sound stupid but I was wondering is there any difference in the lower for an M4 and a standard 20" rifle.

There in no difference between the lower receivers of both rifles(except the markings).

M4 style usually has a 4-pos or six-pos buttstock, basically a collapsible buttstock.

The 20" usually has the A2 style fixed buttstock.

As far as the receiver, they are both the same.
