I thinking about buying a RRA and was wondering how they handle in cold and hot weather. A couple days ago it was 2 degrees with wind chill like -15, and in the summer sometimes it can get up to 100 degrees. Can an AR15 shoot reliably in these conditions? Also I know lube will effect it, what kind of lube should I use? What should I be looking for in an AR that can handle in this type of weather. Does RRA make a chrome bolt, if not who does? Thanks.

I have shot my AR in 102 heat and it worked fine.  And in about 25 F and it worked fine.

I assume since it worked in Vietnam that hot weather is not really a problem.

Hot weather isn't a problem with any modern guns that I know of. Cold weather can effect the lubricant causing it to freeze or gum up. Typically those cold weather climates use grease(TW-25?).

hell, we have guys in iraq(HOT) nad guys in A-stan(COLD) all using M4s and M16s they seem to work fine for them

It works down to -20 with CLP

Shot mine today and last weekend. Last weekend it was 10 F.

They run fine in the cold (shot mine before at -30 below.) Just do not over lube them. Use a very thin lube (not grease) very sparingly. Also dry lube is ok. Just don't use lots of regular gun oil as it turns to gel and will cause malfunctions.

I put 300 rounds through my RRA Entry Tactical last weekend and it was -20...It functioned flawlessly

No Problem at Ft Dix (Feburary) or any problems in Iraq,

I've shot mine here in Alaska at -30 below, I used kerosene for lube. Never had a problem with it other than breaking a firing pin every now and then when it was really cold.

i don't know, man...  i hear it can get up to 100 degrees in ohio.  that's pretty hot!  

Well....we had teams go to the range and mess around in the middle of summer....so 116-119* they function fine.

I have used my AR's in weather so cold ice had formed on my ACOG and RAS system, worked without a problem, and she hadn't been cleaned in about 600 rounds. This was on a very used USGI M16A2 upper.

Feb 4th BSC shoot here in Ohio...it was cold.  It seemed like the guns ran fine.  One guy got ice in his chamber though early in the shoot and his rifle was out of commission till it melted away.

That’s some good camo, only thing that gives them away are the rifles!

"Synthetic Automotive Oils
Synthetic automotive oils (such as Quaker State High Performance Synthetic) work well as general lubricants and because of their detergent capabilities they will help to remove "crud."   (Synthetic oils handle low temperatures better than regular oils.)  Just remember, as with any lubricant, not to over lube things. Valvoline Semi-Synthetic Power Steering Fluid has also been used with great success by many folks as their normal lubricant.

Air Conditioning Refrigerant Oil
Air conditioning refrigerant oil, available at most auto dealers and auto stores, is highly penetrative and makes an excellent lube and a rust preventative.  It works at high temperatures and very low ones (won't freeze even when mixed with Freon) and should be just the ticket for Alaskan use.

A synthetic grease from MS Moly called Arctic Grade 67 also makes a great lube especially for cold weather.  It is a totally synthetic moly grease with the consistency of chocolate mousse. It does not run, weep or smell (very important for the SAF (spousal acceptance factor)). It is reported to work fine at -30 degrees."

I've only seen -30F in a freezer.  I would have a hard time living in that cold weather.

Fired my Bushmaster M4/M16A2 conversion in iraq when it was 138 degrees. No issues. I fired over 600 rounds in 3 minutes with an M16A1 on full auto once. ONCE! It got so hot the pistol grip was too hot to hold with a bare hand but it kept on trucking.
