For those of you who can get the military channel I saw a show today called "GI Factory".  There was a segment on the FN factory in SC where they manufacture the M-16.  Very interesting process.  One thing that I was surprised to see was that some of the 16's are issued with picitinny hand guards.  If you get a chance watch it.

re: the rails:

factory host mentioned Picatinny rails at a time I believe he was referring to the top rail of the A3 upper.

However, you noticed they were also built with the KAC M5 rail there in the factory. That was likely a run of USMC guns that are now all fitted this way

Good segment.

I was surprised the barrels they made were not chrome lined. And they repeatedly showed the polishing of a machined part that was not part of an M16. The picatinny rail was across the top of the hand guard, about 10 inched long. The kevlar helmet manufacturing process was cool. I have one of those, but I am not as confident in it as I was before the show. The quality control test consisted of a 17 grain steel bullet fired at 1700fps into the side of the helmet. I should hope it would stop that tiny and slow projectile. I expected more from the helmet.

What I don't understand is why the tour took place in a FN plant, and not Colt, Armalite, etc, etc...Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't FN still a Belgian owned co.? That's like an auto related tv program taking a tour of a American auto plant - where they assemble Nissans hinking.gif

Still a neat program though!

They may be foreign owned but they are here in the US with US emplyees making guns for US soldiers and us civilians.  Nothing wrong with it at all.

I didn't see the show but wish I could.

But about the rail system.  When I was in the Army I was issued a FN made M16A4 with KAC rail system hand guard.
