1:7 is a more universal twist than 1:9. What ammo do you think won't work in a 1:7?

I was reading this and from what this said and I have read a little elsewhere unless you are going with the heavier bullets there is no real need for 1 in 7 but what do I know.. Thats why I am here asking
In general for the .223: 1/7 Good twist for the 50-100 grain bullets. Excellent accuracy with 60 grain bullets and up... 1/8 Good twist for the 50-80 grain bullets. Excellent accuracy with 55 grain bullets and up... 1/9 Good all around twist ratio. Will shoot well with bullets anywhere from 40-75 grains in weight... 1/10 Good twist for the 40-62 grain bullets, but favoring the lighter side a little more... 1/12 Good twist for the 40-55 grain bullets... 1/14 Good twist for the 40-45 grain bullets... |

For plinking, 1/9 is the way to go.

While I have had good luck with 1:9 twist and 75gr, not everybody has. 69gr is about the max you can COUNT ON with 1:9, if yours can handle the 75 & 77gr loads count yourself among the lucky 50%.
Given the choice I'd rather have 1:7, as it will shoot the 45 grainers - but I shoot alot more 75gr loads than I do 45gr loads. |

Hmm looked through Ammo Man and 90% of what he has is 62 gr or under.
Thats just what I am saying, it seems that is what the vast majority of ammo is out there. What do I need more than a 62 gr for out of a 16 in barrel? |

What is your intended use for this tool? That will tell you if you'll need or desire more than 62gr rounds. Target Shooting? Do you want to shoot really small groups? How far away will the targets be? Is this to be a defensive tool? |

Well, if you want to exclude use of the most terminally effective class of rounds in this caliber, the 75-77 grain rounds, you don't need a 1/7. A 1/9 really does not get you anyting over a 1/7 except a microscopic increase in accuracy with 45-50 grain loads. I perfer the ability to accurately shoot the excellent heavy stuff. |

It all depends on what you are looking to do with it. If this is an inclose weapon, you don't shoot past 100 yards, or mainly shoot 55 grain ammo, then the choice is as simple as heavy carbine or light carbine. The main reason for the 1:7 is heavier ammo, if you are one of the people who only shoots 55 and 62 grain, its not an issue.
The 6721 is working very well for a lot of people. So is the 6920. |

This is a CQB type of set up.
If I am shooting out anything past 100 yds Im using my bolt gun. This is for defense, for tac classes and stuff along those lines. If I wanted something part 100 yds I would wat least get a longer barrel. |

Either one will do well, I carried a 6721 for a few years and enjoyed it. However, it tends to get heavy if you are using a rail and other gear, and end up doing a lot of one hand work with the weapon. The 6920 has a lighter barrel if it matters to you.
ETA- I would have ZERO concerns about using 77 grain ammo in a CQC environment with the 6721. |

If you're just going to be using the lighter weight bullets the 6721 should be fine. I have a 6721 but I didn't like the heavy barrel, it's approx. 1 pound heavier than the 6920 per the Colt website. I changed my barrel myself to a mid-length gas system, mid-weight profile, 1/7 so I could also use heavier ammo and it's lighter now. I use it mainly for defensive short to medium ranges, target and some plinking. If the weight doesn't bother you then the 6721 would be a good choice. Good luck. My new barrel thread link |

That just screams 75gr OTM... Meaning 1:7 twist and getting really friendly with the Black Hills product line. |

I did a search before I posted my ? The posts that showed up (posts from the past 90 days) did not cover the answers I wanted. Sorry if you feel this thread has been covered too many times over the past two years but next time why dont you just ignore it when someone posts it instead of it letting your panties get all up in your crack. I have been around here for a while. I know how to do my homework first but I needed to hear more, and I need to hear it from people who use these for their intended use. Not those who simply sit at a bench trying to punch the same hole at 250 yrds with a combat rifle. (You want to punch the same hole at 250 yrds, you are going to have a longer barrel and something more suited for target shooting than an M4ish setup AR These threads would be a lot better off if the cynics and those without something worthwhile to say just kept to thelselves or topics that actually interest them and they can provide valuble information to. |
