I've read some articles that have said that the main drawbacks to a carbine-length gas sytem are it's increased gas port pressure and early extraction timing.  To slow down extration timing and decrease pressure in a carbine length gas system, could you just use a fatter gas tube?  Presumably the fatter gas tube would take longer to fill with gas and would therefore decrease gas pressures in it and would increase the extraction time.  Or would the extra gas in necessary to fill a fatter tube cause a decrese in muzzle velocity?

Yes it's called the 'Fat Boy' gas tube.

SMGlee of CL Tactcial sells them.

People use extra strength buffer springs and/or heavy buffers to slow the cycling and increase extraction time.  There are also some long squirelly gas tubes you can buy at brownells (to delay the gas pulse).

9mm buffer ought to do it.Mine feels like a full size rifle now when it shoots.

There is nothing wrong with the carbine length gas system, the problem comes from when you actually put a carbine length barrel on said gas system instead of the 16" one that is typically used. The problem is the distance from the muzzle to the gas hole in the barrel, the shorter the distance the less gas time there is less gass time less gas, open the gas hole to compensate too much and now you have ammo sensativity and extractions issues.

This is why the gas system on the Bushmaster dissapator was moved back from being part of the front sight.

Ah.  I read this article and was under the impression that the biggest problem was the fact that the gas port pressure in an M4 was double that originally designed in the M16.
