That may be as good as that ammo is going to group in your rifle. Try some match ammo and see if your groups get better.

try blackhills or federal gold medal match. the ae is more of a plinking ammo.

I would have expected 2.5" groups at 200 yards. Is it common for it to open up more at longer distances?

1. At least you have a five shot group and not three. 2. Any flaw in your shooting discipline will likely be magnified as distance gets larger. 3. Good shooting. |

Yes. There are many variables involved in shooting at longer distances that are not significant at closer ranges. Remember that the bullet takes more than twice as long to get to 200 yards than it takes for it to get to 100 yards. That is not bad shooting at all. With some match ammo I would expect you will be very pleased. Many of the 55grain FMJ bullets are very inconsistent bullet to bullet. I like your redundant sight(s). |

Clarify what you mean by "open up." If you get 2.5" groups at 100 yards, with the same accuracy, you'd get 5" groups at 200 yards... 7.5" at 300 yards... etc. Simple geometry.
BUT (!) with a 5 mph wind you will have twice the time-- at 200 yds.-- for the wind to do it's wicked thing he THEN you must account for added "mirage." (turning crank on can o'worms.) Wonder (as I'm a newbie on this web site) if there isn't already a forum on "mirage" and what it will and won't do. It is thoroughly hashed out, with appropriate knowledge, opinion and falsehood, on other forums. NIIICE shooting setup on that rifle, BTW!!! |

Yes, you both have a point about the wind. It was gusting and blowing a fair amount.
I guess when I say 'open up', I meant more that just geometrically. Since I get 1.25" groups at 100yards, I should be able to get 2.5" groups at 200. But, of course, the winds must be calm. I guess I should expect the groups to 'open up' and exceed 2.5" when the wind starts blowing. I can't wait to try the Black Hills variants. |

What kind of setup is that with a reflex sticking up from the scope tube? I haven't seen that one before.

The reflex sight is a JPoint on a piggyback glue-on mount. The mount was from jprifles.com. I think they stopped making the glue-on version, and now make a ring mounted version, which also looks really cool.
Buy them here http://www.jprifles.com/photos/WV1050.jpg The ARMS ring cap seems a little complicated. It requires the ring top, rail adapter, picatinny rail, the JPoint sight mount, then the sight. The jprifles version is a one piece unit, milled for the JPoint sight, no adapters or multiple mounts. |

That is not bad at all with AE 55gr. ammo. Especially taking into account the wind and the lighter bullet.
I have seen my grouping open up over an inch when I shoot on a windy day vs a calm day at longer distances and that is with a 1x7 twist and a 77gr match bullet. |
