you have an upper receiver and a lower receiver. the upper receiver holds the bolt carrier, charging handle, and bolt. the lower contains the trigger components and all that jazz.

So is the upper and lower both parts of a receiver?

you put the upper and lower receiver together to form your rifle.

The lower receiver is the serial numbered part, the upper receiver is uncontrolled. |

To be a bit more specific, only the lower receiver itself is the part that is considered a firearm.
(NFA parts not withstanding...don't even worry about those!  )The upper receiver/barrel assy. uses two pins to attach to the lower. You'll probably end up with a few of these!  |
