Hi. I know that the AR-15 is composed of an upper, reciver, and lower. I was wondering exactly what these terms mean, that is to say what they are. Are uppers or lowers interchangeable between different rifle manufactures? Thanks.

you have an upper receiver and a lower receiver.  the upper receiver holds the bolt carrier, charging handle, and bolt.  the lower contains the trigger components and all that jazz.

So is the upper and lower both parts of a receiver?

you put the upper and lower receiver together to form your rifle.

To be a bit more specific, only the lower receiver itself is the part that is considered a firearm.
(NFA parts not withstanding...don't even worry about those!)

The upper receiver/barrel assy. uses two pins to attach to the lower.
You'll probably end up with a few of these!
