I'm trying to figure out what the hell I have here. It was on a two position tube, the number "3" stamped on the side . It looks exactly like the CAR non-ribbed stock. Who makes this thing? I'm not sure what I'm going to with it. The damn thing weighs about a pound by itself. If you don't want it, put it up for sale on the EE...
Some retro builder will take it off your hands!

Only if it is aluminum, mil-spec, and has the vinyl-acetate coating (similar in appearance and feel to the coating on the front sling swivel). Then the retro crowd will jump on it (me!me!).

If it's just an aluminum stock with no coating (some are textured) then it's just an aluminum stock.

Drop me a line if it looks like this one and you want to get something lighter...

Are you sure it isn't an "8" on the side of the stock?

I got one from M&A Parts and it has an 8 on the safety-side of the rifle, just like the one above.

it is a big "3" about 1/2" tall on the right side

came off a colt rifle (i just found this out, so i'm guessing it was made by colt?)

castle nut is the one with the little holes, instead of the new style.

it is black, not grey. it does not feel like it is rubber coated like the sling swivel. i will have my camera back within a few days. so i will post pics when i can.

Does anybody a close up of EA forged lower? And how good are their new ones? I had a cast EA it worked very well. I would like to get a EA forged lower, need more info on it.

I suppose it's possible, but I've never seen a Colt aluminum stock w/anything stamped on it. Also, the two tightening holes on the collar go all the way thru, so you can see the threads thru the holes. The coating will be a smooth, kind of shiny, finish, very firm feeling. Not semi soft like the coating on the sling swivels. Finally, the butt will be checkered, though then checkering is semi filled in by the coating.

Oh yeah, the back plate is almost always a lighter shade of parkerizing than the collar.

You can drill additional positioning holes in the tube. They should end up 1/4" dia.

Of course, don't drill all the way into the tube. The drill bit will make a conical bottom on the hole, of course. So, you need to flatten out the bottom.

Dremel makes a 1/4" cylindrical mill bit that you can put in your drill press and finish the holes.

i already have a bunch of colt 4 position tubes and m4 stocks thanks to gundealer3.
i just wanted to know more about it, this actually turned into a pretty cool thread with many different types CAR stocks

also tracked my buddy down and he said that he took it off of an older colt ar15 a2 gov't carbine

All the carbines I carried from 1979 to 1984 were two positions stocks on 5.56 carbines, to include the XM177 I had.

That stock is not Colt but the tube might be. Can you take a pic of the back of the tube?

Actually, I want to take back that last statement. The 2 position plastic stock was used on the 6520 untill the mid 1990s.

When the 6721 and 6920 and M4 came out in the mid 1990s, they used 4 position stocks.
