I wanted to try the 50 yard Santos battle zero at my range this weekend , however the range master would not let me set in at 50 yards- there are only 2 distances to shoot at- 50 ft and 100 yards- you are only allowed to shoot highpower handguns into the range in between, and then only at empty shotgun hulls on the ground ( as he was allowing a group of Asia vsititors to do for 20$ each)
sooo, long story short I had to zero at 100 yards- from a bushy Disapator upper , with a2 sights, from a rest firing Q3131A ammo. I have it at about 2 inches more or less-at 100 yards- can any one point me in the direction of a good balsitics program or information to let me know what I can expect at 150,200 /300 yards?and ranges inbetween as well as what to set the rear sight for at these ranges? I have the sight set to bottom out now at 8/3- This is the only range I can get to right now, so it may have to stay at 100 yards for a while. If I go further south I can shoot up to 300 yards ( again, problem as this is a private range and is set up in hundred yards only, not meters!) I really want to be a better shot, but I feel that the range I have now is holding me back, but I also want to know what I can expect as far as POI at 150/200/300 yards as it is sighted right now!
Any help any of you could afford would be great!

Best,

Jack

For a 55 gr bullet at 3000fps muzzle velo, if you have POI 1.75" above POA @100 yds, you should be dead on at 200yds.

Is this what you need?

Thank you both for your response- what would I be at about 150 yards?  not more than +/- 2 inches?once I have the iron sights set and marked I am going for a scope of some type- my eyes are just not what they used to be and I doubt I could make out a target at better than 200 yards clearly, but shot well with a friends ar15 scoped-I want to be shot I can be at under 200 yards with the irons, but  beyond that its time for a scope-time marches on eh?best-Jack

If you are shooting 2" high at 100yds, you will  a little high at 150 yds, I wouuld guess an inch or so, you should still be slightly high at 200.  You really need to live fire to confirm.

I was doing the Santos  zero, but got rid of my A2 and went to an A1 upper, and just set the sight for a 200 yd zero, and forget about it.

The first thing you need to do is re-index the rear sight to bottom out at 8/3 -3.

Why 8/3-3? Santos was the only system I have heard of bottoming out below 8/3- best-Jack

8/3 is the 300 yard setting on an A2 . 8/3-3 is zero-200 yard , both looking through the small aperture. looking through the large 0-2 aperture, 8/3 is zero-200 yard setting for CQB.

Detachable carry handles are setup differently, 6/3 is 300 yard, 6/3-4 is 0-200 yards throught the small aperture and 6/3 through the 0-2 aperture is CQB setting

These are all IBSZ setings.

point of impact/point of aim  will be the same at 50 yards and 200 yards. you will be slightly high( one inch?) at 100 and slightly less high at 150 yards(1/2 inch?), deadon at 200 , 1/2 inch low at 250 and 1 inch low at  300. This is my best recollection and maybe off a little. If I were you, I would set up 1 inch high at 100 yards with sight set at 8/3-3. YMMV

The idea of the ibz is that you DON'T have to fiddle with the elevation knob for most shooting from 0-250.  At intermediate ranges, 100, 150, 200, just leave it alone, don't fool with the sights.

Also, 8/3 -2 is the 200 yrd setting and the 50 yrd.

And you're right. From 0 - 250, you only need a little hold-over.

This is for the A2 sighting system only.  I can not comment on det. carry handles, and so forth.

Quoted:
8/3 is the 300 yard setting on an A2 . 8/3-3 is zero-200 yard ,

8/3-2 is the 50y/200M setting.

8/3-3 would be the setting for 100y

JackDeth1,
Since you have a Dissipator (16" barrel), at 100y zero so the bullet strikes between 1.5" and 1.75" with your favorite 55gr load and you'll be fairly close to a good 200y zero.

When you get the chance, fine tune it on a 200y range.

Remington's is pretty good.

But you need to find a better range.

Jack,
If you're sight can go to 8/3 -3 you can zero at 100y then use 8/3-2 for 50/300, and 8/3 for 300M and so on.

If you want some decent ballistic calculators head over to The Maryland AR-15 Shooters Site  There is freeware for a Palm PDA (good to 500y), a ballistic spreadsheet, DOS software for ballistic calculations, and links to the JBM online Ballistic Calculator (an excellent calculator) in the Zeroing section.

Here is a table for your carbine - assuming M193 (3100fps) and 2" high at 100y.
Yards Offset from POA
0 -2.6
50 0.2
100 2.0
150 2.6
200 1.9
250 -0.4
300 -4.5

Sorry for the typo!         8/3-3 should read 8/3 -2
