ARmalite ... They developed it, Colt later bought the rights to build it for the Government if I remember my History Channel correctly.

Correct. ArmaLite used the "AR" designation on all their weapons. For example: AR-1 (The "Parasniper") was a bolt action rifle AR-7 was a survival rifle in .22 cal. AR-17 a 12 gauge shot gun AR-13 a hyper velocity, multi barrel gun system for aircraft etc., etc. 5sub |

Simply a military designation, like M1, m2, m4, m14, m7, m8, m9 etc, etc, etc. It has been used before. During WWII, the M16 was an Armored half-track that carried a quad CAL. 50 antiaircraft gun that was used to deavasting effect on soft ground targets. Almost every piece of equipment in the Army has an M designation. Some even have the same as other inventory items, such as the M2 ("ma deuce" CAL .50 machinegun, and the M2 Bradley IFV. Can get confusing when even your bayonet scabbard has a different "M" designation than the bayonet itself (M7, M8A1). Who knows how they decide, there seems to be no logic, rhyme or reason.  |

Let me get this straight - Armalite built the original, but Colt bought the rights to the original?? But I though Colt was the original, and all else were............................??

kbhag is correct. If the above link had worked, their whole site is down right now, you can find that info on Armalite's web page. AR does indeed stand for Armalite Rifle, nothing else.

No it stands for ARmalite and nothing else (no Rifle) as some ARs were shotguns... Freaking Newbies....
