5.56 is high pressure and has a longer leade. .223 is a much tighter neck. .223 is expensive, as most FMJ and all surplus ammo is 5.56.

5.56 can only be fired in a 5.56 chamber, .223 can be fired in either.

there are no major differences, just minor ones I think the neck of the brass is slightly different, and the load is hotter for the 5.56, which is Nato spec.  223 is saami spec.  a .223 chamber has a tighter tolerance hense match/target rifles are usually chambered in .223 rather than a 5.56 chamber, 5.56 is just the opposite. Most uppers are headspaced to feed both 223 and 556.

Not to purposely hijack the thread, but I recently recieved an excellent condition used upper, but the barrel has NO markings what-so-ever.  Nor the upper itself.  How do I find out if it's chambered for 5.56 or for .223?

No markings  you can use a headspace gauge to find out for sure.  But I resent from using any mystery barrel that doesn't even have markings indicating what it's chambered.

Yes, would you like to spread and continue that discussion over in this thread as well?

HS has nothing to do with the difference between 5.56 and .223. If you want to know for certain if it's 5.56 or .223 you can buy from a reputable maker or have the chamber cast and dimensioned.

how so? You can check and see if it'll headspace with 556 or 223, which would accomplish the same thing.

Why would I continue on the other thread? You're doing a fine job of proving my point on this one.

Well, if I'm wrong then I deserved it.  The problem I see is that you seem to look down on members with low post count, I don't think you started out with 4500+ posts either.

Headspace is exactly the same with either chamber.
As for "chamber casting"....there are more than 55 .223/5.56 chambers listed by the major reamer manufacturers. Some of which are nearly identical. It would be almost impossible to tell which one you had.
Don't worry about it, buy the ammo you want and go shoot it

BTW, the main difference is in the throat where 5.56 is more generous, for reliability reasons of which you'll never have to worry about on a shooting range.

Here's a question about .223/5.56 - the RRA Tactical Entry upper lists their upper chambered for both?  Can it be both?

If you are shooting matches go .223 chamber with match grade ammo.If you are getting an AR for defense go chrome lined 5.56 that way you can shoot any ammo.

Chamberings..... Their are 4 that I am aware of

5.56 NATO/223   :  Nato spec chambering with the looser tolerances and deeper throat. Shoots both.

223 Remington  :     SAAMI spec, shallow throat, 223 labeled ammo only, NO 5.56!!

Wylde     :                  RRA offers this as a tighter NATO / looser 223. Shoots both.

5.56 Match  :            Tighter chamber spec, deper throat especially for the long loaded   5.56     Match  rounds

Am I missing any ??? The 5.56 match and Wylde are from Krieger and RRA respectively. I think Wilson make the RRA barrels??
