LET me be the first to say, "welcome [newbie]"!

Buy what you like, as far as looks and go from there!

My advice:

Get a flat top for sure, then read read read the forums here to see what you want to put on it.  The "Picture" thread will give you some ideas too.

Would you consider a Colt?

The Colt 6400c M4 carbine can be had for less than $900 if you shop around. It features:

-M4 marked upper and lower
-A3 flattop with proper RAS numbers
-Chrome-lined chamber and barrel
-Proper 1/7ROT barrel
-Side sling mount
-H buffer and HD extractor spring
-Extended feed ramps
-Standard front pushpin
-No protruding sear block

-Lifetime service agreement

If authenticity is important to you it might be something to consider [:)]

I like everything about my colt 6400C M4 except for the stock of course! soon to be fixed.

I also looked at RRA M4's before buying mine and I thought they looked really nice.  One thing that is nice about the colt is that it will always hold its value much more than any other brand, although I will never sell mine. And, colt makes the actual M4's for the military, FN makes M16's, so I thought that it was really cool to buy it from the company that makes the real deal.  Also I liked the pinned compensator on the colt M4, some other brands I looked at had no compensator.

I love my Colt 6400c M4 not just for what CJAN_NH had posted (that did help) but also cause it looks so darn cool.

I had a BM but use it as trade-in to get my Colt 6400c M4. The BM was okay but every BM i have had has had some type of FTF or FTE trouble and would not fire some of the ammo i would use.

Also my 22lr conver. kit's (i have 3 of them) would not work right in any of the BM.

But my Colt 6400c M4 has fired every-thing i have put in it with out any trouble at all (1000rnds) and my 22lr conver. kits all work super with out any trouble at all to.

I have had 6 BM and 4 Colts my new one the Colt 6400c M4 now makes 5 Colts i have owned and i'm very, very, happy with it.

I put some pics up recently for anyone who might be interested in the different features of a 6400c. From a previous post:

The Colt 6400c has an M4 marked upper and lower:

Heavy duty "H" buffer and heavy duty extractor spring for reliability:

Barrel has proper 1/7ROT, chamber and barrel are chrome lined:

Upper is RAS numbered:

Side sling mount:

The 6400c has a standard pushpin lower, no protruding sear block, proper M4 handguards with dual heatshields, extended feedramps, and has a lifetime service agreement.

I'm guessing you shoot out at Tac-Pro Shooting Center eh?

I'm also guessing college-student budget?

First, I'd establish a budget that you can live with for the purchase. Second, what purpose/uses do you have in mind? Some accessories are great for range use, not so great for harder use.

Stick with the DPMS. CMMG has chromelined, 1/7, M4 barrels, in 14.5" and 16", pre or post ban. They also have flat top uppers, with feed ramp cuts, and they sell DPMS lowers.
