I just bought a Colt AR-15 SP1 with collapsible stock. It's my first AR-15. I shot it twice so far. I am enjoying it a lot!! [snoopy] [sniper2]

I sold my SP1 and CAR15 right before the ban went into effect and bought 3 pre ban Bushmaster lowers and assembled with M16A1 uppers. 2 into 3[lifter]. Still have fond memories of the SP1's, they always seemed slicker and lighter than the A1 confiruration. I always hated the stupid screw though, my first "AR" was a Hydramatic M16A1[uzi].

Another SP1 junkie!
Cool pics. I have a '72 SP1 and it's in EXCELLENT condition. I wish I had another. I love the damn things. CC |

I had one just like that back when I was in college, in 79-80. Ended up selling it as I was in need of cash. I've regretted it ever since. Finally back in the AR game a year ago with a Bushmaster 20" HBar. Thought it would be close, but it was too heavy compared to how light the SP1 felt. Sold that and got a DPMS lightweight 16 with the regular stock, A1 upper (Like that upper better for some reason) and the lightweight barrel. It feels closer to what I remember in terms of how light and easy to handle it is. As was the SP1.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Dan |

jzdziarski No offense guys, but what's so great about outdated hardware? View Quote It's the nostalgia of it. To have one of those rifles and to own a piece of history. A mechanically functioning, piece of history. To see how firearms engineering was "back then" compared to now. Wow! Back in it's day, the SP1 was quite advanced compared to other firearms of that time, no? |
|
A good comparison, (for me), are guitar amps. Some of the old amps, (1950s, 60s) era amps, are the best sounding out there. They may require more maintence, but they look awesome, hold a good value as a collectable, and are always just plain "Cool"... (It's the fact that it's so old, it looks like it HAD to be through something in its past)....
I part. love the triangle handguards that just look so cool! |
|
i'm fairly new to AR's
i noticed the lack of forward assist on the SP1 ... How often do you use the forward assist on newer models? |

That fellas , is what got me started on this strange road as a kid....damn you G.I. Joe....

Quoted: No offense guys, but what's so great about outdated hardware? View Quote Would you say that about a 1966 corvette? What's so "outdated"? Once they changed the buffer, chrome lined the chamber/bore, and taught the troops to clean it, the rifle ran very reliably. Gene Stoner, the designer, thought the forward assist was a bad idea. If the round doesn't chamber, why force it ? He thought that was asking for more trouble. Many agree. The old farts running US army wanted a forward assist because, they were used to pushing forward on the op-rod handle of the be-loved Garand. The USAF didn't want it and the Marines, didn't care either way. Think about this: The legendary FAL didn't have a forward assist either ! (Israel not-withstanding) The sights are "set and forget" 0-300 yards. nothing to get inadvertently mis-adjusted by accident. (I do like the ghost ring on the A2, I put one on My SP-1.) Yeah, the newer handguards are stronger, but there is something cool about the old triangle ones. Maybe it's because of my age, I was issued the M16A1, but I love these old rifles. Lightweight, reliable, simple. |

I have one which is on sale at the local Pawn Shop on consignment. I have had it for 24 years, but I never shoot it, it's time to let someone else enjoy it. The flat top HBar 6700 below it is also going there soon. I just got rid of an old Oly carbine there last month.
Goodbye old friends! Hello M60 and M16A1 carbine! |

My SP-1 is my favorite AR right now, it is from 1975.
It was the model I first saw of the AR-15 and still damn pretty. It is funny I am becoming a Colt elitist, I used to be a Bushy guy. |

Got my SP-1 for $550 including dies, two mags, sling, carry case, and a couple boxes of ammo. Only had two boxes of ammo through it according to my grandfather.
Never needed the forward assist then, when I was in the army/guard(M-16A2), or now(M-4A1). Only purpose I can see its use for is after performing a "press check", to ensure the bolt is fully seated. By the way, A-1 sights don't "lose" their zero. Two days ago I was shooting a bit high with my M-4. Turns out the rear elevation wheel got bumped 2 clicks. Still on target but not where they should have been. I know, I know, I should have checked them prior to qualifying. My point is you don't have to worry about that with the A-1 rear sight. |

The really fun SP-1...

1981 SP-1 - looking for a carbine, though I can't afford it right now. This one is all original with about 200 rounds through it.
Hey... Would it be a sin to install a 3 prong flash suppressor on this? |
|
After the AWB goes bye bye, I will pick up an SP1 w/o the forward assist, with the 3 prong flash hider and donate it to my dad. he carried one in the USAF.

Back in 1981 i bought one of each, The Sporter R6000 and the Carbine R6001 for a total combined cost of 500.00 dollars. Both SP1's have provided me with some good times for over twenty three years and both are running strong and not missing a beat. Back in 93' i picked two more AR15 carbines because this original "Romantic" design of the R6001 is hard to beat with its lite weight, accurate shooting preformance, and that unique Aluminum black resign tela stock is just so trick. The M4 convertions are impressive but one must remember that the basic simple carbine has a lot to offer as it one of the best built AW on the planet.

Well, I had two SP1's and sold both off. I kept the stock and upper from one though and I've tried to build a clone on a Bushmaster receiver. I traded the A1 birdcage for a 3-prong, but I still need to get the right grip. No forward assist, but on a BM receiver, I'm going to have to live with the raised mag fence.

Love the SP1's! I've got one with a four digit SN from 1966 (according to Biggerhammer). The more high-speed AR/M4 stuff that comes out, the more I appreciate the classic look, feel, and function of the original.

i just went into the war locker and hugged mine. i just got mine a few months ago and love the classic look of the little fella. i recently purchased a second sp-1 and will leave that one in its original configuration as my first one is going to be turned into a xm177e2 SBR

Hey... Would it be a sin to install a 3 prong flash suppressor on this? View Quote No way! Put the old 3 prong on it. It is as it should be. |

The SP1: The first, The best. It is the 'essence of the AR-15' light, slim, and handy.
The only dated thing on it is the 1/12 rifling It has the proper pistol grip. Don't think so? try to use the folded down trigger guard (for use with gloves) with the A2 grip. personally, I think the 20 round magazines look better in the SP1 (I also think that they are much handier than the long 30's) Mine was made in 1968 and has the 3x colt scope. (the dork that owned it before me streched out the elastic on the scope cover) sorry no pics |

I love my SP1.
I did put a 3 prong FH on it. I am also concidering goign with the chrome bolt the earlier models had. My carrier does have FA serrations. I have debated about getting one without, but cna't jsutify the price. the SP1 will always be my favorite hump gun. |
