The barrel is stamped "SS 5.56" and there are  raised letters "P M" on the carry handle above the forward assist. It has a 20" barrel. Thanks for your advise.

Who made the gun?
Is the 5.56 part of the roll mark kind of offset, one part being deper than the other?
If it is I would say that you have an Olympic Arms barrel.
It would be a 1/9 twist stainless steel barrel.

Of course I could be wrong.

It's a Oly receiver that is marked "CAR-AR", and yes the nimbers are offset.

Then you have an Olympis Arms lower, I don't know about the upper and the barrel is a stainless steel.
It could be a SUM barrel.
Call up Oly and ask.

The PM on your upper is Palmetto Mfg.
They made uppers for numerous other companies,
incl. Oly.

Now that's funny.
Palmetto Armory made the uppers but they went through Oly for the lowers.
Hmmmm.......

I should have said that palmetto mfg. did the forging.
Just like alcoa and harvey al. co. did for colt

Palmetto mfg?
Do you have a source of info for that?
Everything I know about Palmetto is about Palmetto Armory.
From what I can gather they were a small shop that assembled AR15's from parts they bought from everyone else.
I have owned one Palmetto Armory AR15.

Palmetto Armory and Palmetto Mfg. are two different companies.
Uppers and lowers are forged by outside contractors and are
machined by whoever builds them into guns.
For example:
The CM on Colt uppers is, Colt-Martin Marrittea
The CH is, Colt-Harvey Aluminum Co.

I read a tech manual a long time ago and found this out.
